The Dreaded Squat
Most people don’t like to squat. Mainly because it’s a very uncomfortable exercise to do and can cause a lot of issues especially if done incorrectly.
The typical back squat is a very difficult exercise to do and master mainly because most people don’t have the hip, knee and shoulder mobility to perform it correctly. Trying to maintain a strict upright position while back squatting makes it almost impossible to do.
Powerlifters have to back squat as it is part of the their competition but they perform low bar squats with more of a forward lean which is a much better way to do the exercise.
For the rest of us there are much better squatting options such as Bulgarian squats, front squats, zercher squats and various types ofdumbbell squats.
When back squatting you cannot lock the hips in the top position otherwise the bar will just fall off your back but with the above squatting variations you can lock the hips in the top position which allows for much better overall low back health.
When training our clients we use these types of squatting exercises for leg development and strength which get great results in a much safer effective manner.
