He rode a bucking three-year-old mare that had already thrown every rider who dared try her — for a $300 bet from a stranger's neighbor. He didn't even grow up around American rodeo. He grew up on an island off the coast of Australia.
Born in Kissimmee, Florida, Chris Cox's life changed at just two years old when his family moved to Prince of Wales Island off the Australian coast. A clinic led by renowned horseman Lee Reborse became the turning point that set his whole path in motion. He went on to study at Longreach Pastoral College in Queensland, where he met fellow student Ken May, and spent his college years helping Ken with c**t starting and horsemanship clinics on the side.
Then at eighteen he'd saved up just enough money for a plane ticket back to the United States. The day after he landed in Florida, close to where he'd been born, he was already back on a horse, helping gather 5,000 head of cattle. Then he traveled to Tennessee to visit his mother's relatives. Their neighbors had a three-year-old Tennessee Walking Horse known for bucking off both riders and saddles alike. They dared him to ride her for $300. He did.
Then he built a career on exactly that kind of instinct — reading a horse nobody else could handle and finding a way through anyway. He became a four-time undefeated World Champion of Road to the Horse, the toughest c**t-starting competition in the industry, where clinicians draw an untouched three-year-old from the AQHA Remuda and build a working partnership with it in real time, judged not just on the result but on how humanely they got there.
Then he took what he'd learned and built it into something bigger than competition. His Chris Cox Horsemanship television show has aired on RFD-TV for years, and his nationwide Ride the Journey Tour has brought his hands-on teaching to horse owners across the country who'll never set foot in a professional arena but want a better relationship with the horse in their own barn. He's also competed and bred in the National Cutting Horse Association, competed in reined cow horse and team roping, and received the Monty Roberts "Equitarian of the Year" award for his approach to working with horses.
An island kid who found his calling at a clinic. A $300 dare on an unrideable mare. A career built on teaching people that horsemanship was never about force in the first place.
That is Chris Cox. 🤠🐴🏆

To solve any horse ‘problem’ or to build a solid, bombproof mount, it is essential that you listen to your horse. A horse will always, always tell you where he is still unsure and needs help. But to listen to a horse, you must become aware of the signals he is giving you. If you miss those signals, you may be setting yourself up for a wreck.
