I know this is late but we are going to try it anyway. Sign-up sheet will be posted in the clubhouse tonight by 5 p.m. on the bulletin board. This will be flighted so you will compete against players close to your caliber. We will have a women’s division as well as long as we can get a minimum of 9.
We’re getting close to the Labor Day Derby at the club, and this one is all about SURVIVAL!
Each flight will consist of 11 golfers, with an entry fee of $20 per golfer.
HOW DOES THE DERBY WORK?
It’s simple: Don’t be the highest score on the hole.
All 11 golfers will tee off and play the first hole together. Once everyone has finished, the golfer with the highest score is eliminated. Everyone else survives and moves on.
Then we do it again.
Hole 1: 11 golfers → 1 eliminated → 10 survive
Hole 2: 10 golfers → 1 eliminated → 9 survive
Hole 3: 9 golfers → 1 eliminated → 8 survive
The process continues through Hole 8, with one golfer eliminated on each hole.
That leaves THREE golfers standing when we reach Hole 9.
All three finalists will play Hole 9, and the golfer with the lowest score on the final hole wins the Derby!
WHAT IF THERE’S A TIE?
If two or more golfers are tied for the highest score on a hole, we settle it with a chip-off.
The tied golfers will chip to a designated hole, with the closest ball surviving and advancing. The golfer farthest away is eliminated.
No making up for a bad hole later. You just have one job:
SURVIVE.
To make things even more interesting, we will also have pari-mutuel betting.
Betting will be available Win, Place or Show, similar to horse racing:
WIN — Your golfer must finish 1st.
PLACE — Your golfer must finish 1st or 2nd.
SHOW — Your golfer must finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd.
With pari-mutuel betting, you are not betting against the club at predetermined odds. All wagers of each type go into their respective pools, and the payout is determined by the amount wagered and which golfers finish Win, Place and Show.
In simple terms: the more money bet on a golfer, the lower the potential payout. The less money bet on a golfer, the bigger the potential payout if your ticket wins.
So pick the favorite, find yourself an underdog, or back the golfer you think can handle the pressure!
