As the NBA Finals start tonight versus the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs, did you know Brandon Williams โ92 received a ring as a member of the 1999 Spurs championship squad that beat the Knicks in the Finals?!
Williams came to The Academy from Collinston, Louisiana (population 264) without ever having seen our campus. A 48-hour bus ride from the Deep South to New England dropped Williams off into a world that was completely foreign to him. In the next four years playing for Malcolm Wesselink, Williams created a new standard for what was possible for Exonians on the court. After struggling early on in his time at Exeter, Williams learned how to not only manage the academic rigor and every other challenge our school offers but to thrive in our environment.
Following a great career playing for Bob McKillop at Davidson College, Williams spent a decade bouncing around leagues and nations as a player. He had โcups of coffeeโ, in his words, in the NBA with the Golden State Warriors, San Antonio Spurs and Atlanta Hawks. He played in the Continental Basketball Association and the National Basketball Development League for La Crosse, Huntsville, Sioux Falls and Rockford, and played abroad for teams in the Philippines, Italy, Greece, France, Germany and Israel. Seeing the game at so many levels and in so many cultures honed his eye as a talent evaluator.
Once hanging up the shoes, Williams received his law degree and has went on to have amazing success working in a myriad of different basketball jobs, including executive roles for the Philadelphia 76ers and Sacramento Kings. Currently, Williams is based with his beautiful family in Atlanta where he is co-leading GwCโs sports, entertainment, and tech team of attorneys & advisors.
As more and more high-level basketball players choose to go to basketball-centric schools/academies, we are even more proud of the greats of our program like Brandon Williams who proved you donโt have to choose between a great education or a great high school basketball experience - You can indeed have both
