The 2026 Washington Midsummer Renaissance Faire brought 16th-century living to Sky Meadows in Snohomish from July 18 to Aug. 16. ⚔️ 🔥 🪄 🎭 🎨 🎶

As families and friends entered Towne Gate into the Village of Merriwick, they embarked on a journey along Wanderer’s Way, visiting the Maypole, waving to Faye the Living Statue, walking through Opal the Fairy’s magical bubbles, taking part in archery and sword fighting, getting their hair braided and face painted, weaving baskets, observing the blacksmiths and their craft and shaming those who walked through the streets before entering Nottingham Jail.

Trekking down Champion's Row, eventgoers also took a ride on the Dragon Swing, participated in knife/star and axe throwing, watched the World Tournament of Champions inside the Royal Joust Arena and took a swig at the Red Dragon Inn.

Some of the numerous performers included the Baksana Ensemble and its band of merry music-makers and daring dancers, Paolo Garbanzo and his dangerous juggling, Equestrian Chaos and its family of archers, Robin Hood & Maid Marian and their magical storytelling and BrooN and his comedic magic.

The final inductee we're featuring today is Mary Etter Parker. 🏃‍♀️ 👟 🏀 ⚽

Parker was a multi-sport athlete at Snohomish High School where she earned 11 letters: three in soccer, four in basketball and four in track and field.

In track and field, Parker posted high school best distances in the discus (168-6) and the shot put (48-2 ½), ranking sixth and fourth in the nation, respectively, and she was also a three-time individual state champion: discus (1998, 154-10; 1999, 155-10) and shot put (1998, 44-4). She finished runner-up in the shot put as a senior and was second in the discus and seventh in the shot put as a sophomore.

Parker continued her track and field dominance on a scholarship at the University of Oregon where she earned two NCAA All-American honors in the discus while competing for the Ducks. For a length of time in Ducks history, she ranked second in the discus (179-7) and fourth in the shot put (49-11 ¼). She also tallied 41 wins in her four outdoor seasons and five more in her indoor seasons. She appeared at the Pac-10 Championships all four seasons, recording two third- and fourth-place finishes in the discus and three top-11 finishes in the shot put. These results led her to qualify for the NCAA Division 1 Championships, which she advanced all four seasons, posting two eighth-place finishes and a 17th- and 19th- place finish, all in the discus. She also competed in and won the 2003 Inaugural West Regional NCAA Division 1 Championships. As a freshman in 2000, she earned the top finish among NCAA freshmen after entering the NCAA Championship seeded 16th.

The first inductee we're featuring today is Erik Norgard. 🏈

Norgard graduated from Arlington High School in 1984 and attended Western Washington University for one season before transferring to the University of Colorado Boulder. As a Buffalo, his accolades included serving as team co-captain, earning an All-Big Eight selection and receiving the 1988 Joe Romig Award, given to the top rising senior for outstanding performance on the offensive line.

Undrafted in the NFL Draft, Norgard began his professional career with the Houston Oilers franchise as a free agent in 1989. Over a 10-season career, which included the team's relocation to Tennessee in 1997, he appeared in 108 regular-season games. Playing as both a guard and a center, he tallied a remarkably low penalty count of only five infractions. Seven starts in the 1994 season highlighted his reliability, enabling him to progress from reserve to a key rotational player on an offensive line tasked with protecting quarterback Warren Moon. Norgard also represented the Oilers during the 1992 World League season as the team's designee to the San Antonio Riders.

Norgard's career highlights include two rare receiving touchdowns as an offensive lineman. He caught his first in 1996 on a pass from Snohomish County Hall of Famer Chris Chandler against the New Orleans Saints and his second on a pass from Oilers quarterback Steve McNair against the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day in 1997. Historically, Norgard remains tied at No. 3 with 11 others for the most career total receiving touchdowns (two) by an NFL offensive lineman. In total, his three career receptions for 16 yards along with two fumble recoveries aided the Oilers' ball security efforts during his tenure with the team.

The final inductee we're featuring today is Mitch Canham. ⚾

Canham was a multi-sport athlete at Lake Stevens High School, earning letters in baseball, football and wrestling. But after lettering four years and serving as a four-year starter on the Vikings baseball team, it was evident early on which sport he excelled.

Playing primarily catcher, Canham finished his senior season having tallied a .430 batting average, four triples, four doubles, 30 RBIs and 12 stolen bases. His efforts also helped lead Lake Stevens to four state tournaments. Not only did he shine on the diamond, but he also graduated in the top five of class. His performances in baseball and in the classroom helped earn him a scholarship to continue his athletic and academic endeavors at Oregon State University (OSU).

As a Beaver, Canham served as a starting catcher three of his four seasons. His efforts behind home plate on defense and his batting abilities on offense helped lead OSU to back-to-back national titles: 2006 (first in program history) and 2007. What’s also unique about that feat is no athlete from Snohomish County has been a part of any sports team that won two NCAA Division I National Championships.

After four seasons, Canham posted a career batting average of .314 and recorded 31 doubles, eight triples, 25 home runs and 152 RBIs. He also earned NCAA Division I All-American honors his senior year, which no other Snohomish County college athlete had ever won in baseball.

Canham continued his baseball journey after college when he was drafted by the San Diego Padres as the 57th overall pick in the 2007 MLB Draft. Before retiring in 2015, he played for minor-league programs of the Padres, Oakland Athletics, St. Louis Cardinals, Kansas City Royals and Washington Nationals, reaching Triple-A by 2010.

🚨 The 2026 Snohomish County Sports Hall of Fame Induction Banquet is a few weeks away!

📍Edward D. Hansen Conference Center inside Angel Of The Winds Arena (2000 Hewitt Ave., Everett, WA 98201)

Throughout this week, we'll be featuring all eight inductees: five athletes, one coach, one contributor and one team.

This morning, we're starting with Megan Amundson. 🏐

Amundson was a multi-sport athlete at Stanwood High School, earning four letters in volleyball and tennis and two in basketball. But it was volleyball, Amundson’s favorite sport of the three, where she dominated.

At the conclusion of her high school career, Amundson recorded 725 kills, 359 digs, an 87.0 serving percentage and three Everett Herald All-Area first-team honors, all in addition to helping the Spartans appear in two Class 4A state tournaments. She also broke program records in kills in a career, aces in a match (still holds record), aces in a season and aces in a career. During her senior year, which marked her third season as team captain, Amundson accumulated several accolades, including Class 4A All-State first-team and 4A All-Western Conference North Division selections.

After graduating, Amundson continued playing volleyball at Western Washington University. Not only was she a four-year starter and team captain her junior and senior seasons, but she also helped play a role her freshman year in the Vikings claiming the West Region Championship title and finishing runner-up at the NCAA Division II National Championships in 2007, participating in all three NCAA II Elite Eight matches. She concluded her career ranked third in service aces (35, 0.44) and fifth in kills (325, 3.61) in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC). She was also a three-time GNAC Academic All-Star selection, West Region All-Tournament selection as a senior, two-time GNAC All-Star honorable mention and a GNAC All-Star team member.

Racing plays a key role in the overall sports scene in Snohomish County. From stock cars, figure-eight and drifting at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe to BMX at McCollum Pioneer Park in Everett, there’s competition for everyone, regardless if you’re the spectator in the stands or the rider at the starting gate. 🚲 🏁

Located a few minutes off Interstate 5 is 78-acre McCollum Park, which has served as the home track of Bigfoot BMX since 1996. Bigfoot BMX is a nonprofit organization that’s operated by a volunteer board and dedicated group of individuals who help maintain the track to be a USA BMX-sanctioned site.

The organization’s mission? To SUPPORT RIDERS through free helmet and bike loaner programs, skills, clinics, workshops and summer camps, to STRENGTHEN TRACKS by maintaining the track surface and staffing all events and to BUILD COMMUNITY by providing opportunities for everyone of all ages and skill levels to engage in an active lifestyle and a competitive sport while making friends and learning new skills.

On July 19, Bigfoot BMX hosted its State Race Double/State Championship Qualifier event, welcoming riders from across Washington state for a fun and competitive weekend. You know you’re at a BMX event when tents and bikes line the racecourse representing several different racing teams.

Some groups regularly in attendance at Bigfoot BMX events include Bakerview BMX from Mount Vernon, Revolution Racing, Toros Cycling Club, Diablos Racing, Mayhem from Seattle, g.h.y. bikes from Renton, Cycle Therapy Racing from Auburn, One Trak Mind from Kitsap County, Rip Tide Racing from Pierce County, PONK Racing from Tacoma and Bike Master from Vancouver. This results in strong connections trekking up and down the Evergreen State. 🚲 🗺️ 🌲

From July 11-12, the 2026 Aquafest 3on3 basketball tournament took place at Lake Stevens High School, concurrently with the Lake Stevens Aquafest festivities. 🏀

The Aquafest 3on3 event is one of several summer events put on by Stars Unlimited, which has been a long-time partner of the Snohomish County Sports Commission for several years. 🤝

What’s also great about many of these summer sports events is that they’re scheduled the same weekend as other community events, providing local and visiting teams, coaches, athletes and families with opportunities to explore the area before and after the game. 🗺️

Speeding is illegal, but that law was put on hold for a day at the fourth annual Rocket League Championship and Esports with Police Tournament, hosted at the Tulalip Boys And Girls Club on July 23. 🎮 🏆 🚓

Thirty Snohomish County law enforcement mentors representing various agencies (i.e., police precincts, sheriff’s departments and Washington State Patrol) teamed up with more than 100 youth from several Boys & Girls Clubs of Snohomish County chapters to boost and fly cars to score goals, all for sole possession of the Rocket League Championship trophy and bragging rights across the region. 🗺️

The Everett Boys & Girls Club and Everett Police Department were champions in 2024 and the Mukilteo Boys & Girls Club and Mukilteo Police Department in 2025, but this year witnessed a new winning group: Granite Falls Boys & Girls Club and Granite Falls Police Department. 🎮 🏆 🚓

It was an exciting day of gaming, mentorship and community, and Dave & Buster's Lynnwood provided lunch and wings for the Hot Wing Challenge, which resulted in a tie between the Everett Police Department and Williams Investments.

"Rocket League is a fantastical sport-based video game, developed by Psyonix (it’s 'soccer with cars'). It features a competitive game mode based on teamwork and outmaneuvering opponents," according to an article on the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) website. "Players work with their team to advance the ball down the field, and score goals in their opponents’ net. Rocket League is a technical game which involves both high-level dexterity and fast-paced gameplay.

"Rocket League requires a tremendous amount of critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity from players to achieve and sustain success," according to the NFHS article. "Schools and players in high school have had a great experience with the game and continue to experience its benefits."
