Here's what made me laugh. A real estate agent in Tennessee was bragging that she's got 6 lakes within an hour of her place.

Six... Within an hour... Like it was a big number.
In WA you can't drive a few miles without crossing water, seeing water, or feeling the water. We call that last one rain. I've got 6 lakes within 15 minutes of my front door, and every one of them holds fish.

So the water flex doesn't quite land on a guy from the Pacific Northwest.

This trip is the scouting run. The towns, the land, the cost of living, the kind of place I could actually build something on. The trout water down there doesn't hurt either. I coach online now, so the work comes with me wherever I land.

That is the whole point of the rebuild.

The first thing I check on every check-in. It's not the scale. It's sleep.

Same pattern shows up week after week:

The client who slept 7+ hours... workouts hit. Hunger stayed manageable. The 3 PM decision-making was still intact. Scale moved.

The client who slept under 6... cravings spiked. Training felt heavier than it actually was. Willpower was already gone before lunch. Scale stalled or moved the wrong way.

You can hit your macros perfect. You can train perfect. If sleep is broken, the math doesn't add up.

So before I look at protein, before workouts, before the scale... I ask about sleep.

If that's off, everything downstream is fighting a current.

Flying out to East TN this week.

Going to drive through the towns I've been mapping for months. Walk the streets. Eat in the diners. Talk to the people who actually live there.

This isn't a vacation. It's putting boots on the ground before making the call.

The online coaching side works from anywhere now... clients are real, the systems hold up. So the real question isn't whether I can move. It's whether East TN is the place that makes the rebuild make sense.

Protein alone isn't enough.

Most guys trying to build muscle hammer the chicken and rice, hit the same lift days for years, and wonder why they look exactly the same.

The protein matters. But it's only part of the equation.

Muscle is built from: protein + the right kind of training stimulus + recovery + a few specific cofactors that make the protein you eat actually turn into the muscle you're trying to grow.

Most stacks for muscle gain are just expensive protein powder. The one I use with my clients fills the actual gaps.

27 years of coaching changes how you see people.

You stop hearing the goals they say out loud. You start hearing what they actually want.

The woman who says "I want to lose 20 pounds" usually wants to feel like herself again, and maybe get the attention she needs from that special someone.

The guy who says "I want to add muscle" usually wants to feel like his age and body isn't slipping away from him like he saw happen with his dad.

The mom who says "I want to be healthy for my kids" usually wants to stop feeling guilty about the cookie she ate at 9 PM when she finally gets some time to herself.

Real coaching isn't about the goals. It's about hearing what the goal is hiding.

In June 2012 a client sent me this message.

It was an honor to get it then and its always nice to see in my memories.

Looking back now, that's exactly the kind of result I try to get my clients to recognize beside the scale or the measuring tape...

Not the measurements. Not the deadlift number. It's the afternoon she was able to turn her day around. It's the desk she came back to with actual energy.

14 years later and this is still the type of days that bring smiles to my face when they report back.

That's the real ROI of coaching. Not the transformation photo. The Tuesday that changed from "🤬" to "😁".

The fitness industry doesn't want busy adults to win.

If you could actually solve your weight in 16 weeks, with 3 short workouts a week and a handful of supplements, they'd be out of business by Q2.

So they sell you BCAAs you don't need. Fat burners that don't work. A 14-day cleanse for the Instagram algorithm. A new app every quarter. A workout split that requires 90 minutes you don't have.

The whole machine is built on you almost making it, but not quite.

The way out: stop chasing the new thing. Pick the boring fundamentals. Run them for 16 weeks. Repeat for the next 30 years.

Comment "truth" if you recognize the lie they have been trying to sell you the last few years.

Anyway... The schedule right now is brutal.

Coaching clients. Sales calls. Real estate decisions. Packing boxes. Building the online side of the business that's about to be the whole business. Eating something at some point.

Building a business AND selling a house AND planning a move across the country don't ask permission. They just stack on top of each other.

The 3 questions I ask every new client in the first 10 minutes:

1. What's actually been getting in your way?
2. What have you already tried, and why did it stop working?
3. If we nail this 12 months from now, what changes in your life?

#3 is the one that matters. If you can't answer it clearly, we hold off until you can.

Because the pounds you lose aren't the point. The version of you actually living differently is.

In one word, what is the one thing that changes for you if you nailed all your health and fitness goals?
