Howard Martial Arts Howard Martial Arts is a fully equipped martial arts school with the highest quality of instruction. Kids and Adults train separately.

Proud member of the Invictus Law Enforcement Jiu-jitsu Collective. Howard Martial Arts has been giving back to Harlan County since 2003. We teach traditional Kempo Karate with classes for children and adults ages 5 and up. Gyodokan Kempo Karate is a combination of Traditional Okinawan Kempo Karate, Escrima (Filipino Stickfighting), Taekwondo, Jiu-jitsu and Kickboxing. We also have classes in the

art of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu for ages 8 and up. We teach values to Children like HONOR, RESPECT, and SELF-CONFIDENCE. We teach adults MENTAL and physical DISCIPLINE and the most practical of SELF-DEFENSE techniques. About the Instructor: Daniel Howard, Hanshi- 9th degree black belt in Okinawan Kempo Karate. Grandmaster Daniel Howard has over 45 years in the martial arts and holds black belt and instructor rankings in several arts. He is the founder / director of Gyodokan Ryukyu Kempo Karate. He is a member and serves on the Shihankai (Master) board for the Okinawan Karate Alliance and 3 Mountain Martial Arts Federation. He is also a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu under 3rd degree black belt Prof. Brian Jones (Carlson Gracie Jr.). He is the official self-defense instructor for the Harlan County Domestic Violence Council and travels throughout the year teaching seminars. Master Howard is a 3 time international karate champion and has won several state and regional titles. Master Howard is also the Captain at the Harlan County Detention Center and serves as the training coordinator and supervisor. On Oct. 1, 2013 Master Howard was inducted into the International Martial Arts Hall of Fame as Grandmaster Instructor of the Year.

When you walk past my dojo (school) and you see my students wearing gloves, shin guards, etc., and they are striking each other and shooting into takedowns, striking on the ground and attempting submissions, they are not doing "MMA". They are doing the complete art of Jiu-jitsu. When I hear Jiu-jitsu practitioners say they need to "add takedowns or striking to their Jiu-jitsu", this is weird to me. As the "sport" of Jiu-jitsu has grown, like Karate, the combative side of the art is being lost.
I love martial arts competitons but the overwhelming majority of people sign-up for martial arts classes for fitness and self-defense. Only a small percentage have interest in competing, yet there are schools that will not promote you unless you compete.
