Sheriff Helton has announced a leadership transition plan designed to ensure continued stability and uninterrupted operations throughout the reminder of 2026 and into the next Administration.

With the recent retirement of Undersheriff Michael Walker, Mark Rhoads agreed to serve as the Undersheriff beginning August 1, 2026, until he is sworn in as the next Lea County Sheriff in January 2027 upon completion of the General Election and Election Certification. This decision was made to help ensure a smooth transition and allow Mark Rhoads time to familiarize himself with critical functions, the daily operation, and the personnel of the Lea County Sheriff's Office. It will also afford Rhoads time to evaluate and begin to develop his vision for the future of the Lea County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff Helton and Mark Rhoads both emphasize this transition reflects a shared commitment to the Deputies, the staff, and the Citizens of Lea County.
