IWB Carry Positions Explained:
Appendix, Strong-Side Hip & Cross Draw
Inside the Waistband (IWB) carry is one of the most popular ways to conceal a firearm for everyday carry. With a good Kydex holster, you can comfortably and discreetly carry in multiple positions depending on your body type, clothing, and lifestyle. Here are the most common IWB positions:
1. Appendix Carry (AIWB)
Position: 12–2 o’clock (front of the body, near the appendix).
Pros:
Excellent concealment under most shirts
Very fast draw stroke
Easy to protect/control the firearm while seated or driving
Cons:
Requires a good holster with a proper sweat guard
Can be uncomfortable for some body types or when sitting for long periods
Best for: Smaller to medium frame pistols and people who prioritize concealment.
2. Strong-Side Hip Carry
Position: 3–5 o’clock (on the strong side, behind the hip bone).
Pros:
Very natural draw motion
Highly comfortable for all-day wear
Good balance between concealment and accessibility
Cons:
Slightly more printing than appendix with tighter shirts
Can be harder to conceal when bending or sitting
Best for: Larger pistols and people who want a comfortable, reliable draw.
3. Cross Draw (IWB)
Position: Usually 8–10 o’clock (weak side, across the body).
Pros:
Good option for driving or seated work
Can be more comfortable for some body shapes
Easier access when wearing certain outer garments
Cons:
Slower and less natural draw for most shooters
Requires excellent training to avoid sweeping your body
Best for: Backup guns, off-body scenarios, or specific professions.
Key Tips for Successful IWB Carry:
Always use a quality Kydex holster with adjustable cant, ride height, and claw for better concealment.
A good belt makes a huge difference — soft belts sag and cause printing.
Start with a dry-fire practice routine in your chosen position before daily carry.
Comfort and concealment improve dramatically once you break in the holster and find your ideal position.
