It’s hard to put into words what my grandfather, Angus Cameron, meant to me and our family.
As I sit here thinking about all the memories, what stands out most is how much of himself he gave to the people he loved. No matter where life took us, he was always there. From British Columbia and Saskatchewan all the way down to Florida, he made the trips to visit us and be part of our lives.
I’ll always be grateful for the years I got to spend living with him in Cole Harbour. He opened his home to me so I could attend Auburn High School, make tremendous lifelong friendships, and play Major Midget hockey. For two years, he spent countless hours driving me back and forth to Bridgewater for practices and games with the Mustangs. I will always cherish the time, energy, and love that went into those drives.
Years later, he did the exact same thing for my brother Logan, opening his doors once again and giving him the same opportunity to attend Auburn and play hockey. That’s just who Grampy was. If family needed him, he was there without hesitation.
I’m also thankful that hockey allowed me to see parts of the world that were special to him, especially Northern Ontario and Kirkland Lake, where he was born and worked in the gold mines. Being able to experience a place that shaped so much of who he became is something I’ll always cherish.
But more than anything, I’m grateful for the man he was. Angus Cameron was selfless, hardworking, humble, and always put his family ahead of himself. He never asked for recognition and never expected anything in return. He simply showed up, time and time again, for the people he loved.
The older I get, the more I realize that some of the greatest acts of love aren’t the big moments. They’re the rides to practice, the open bedroom door, the long visits, the sacrifices nobody sees, and the unwavering support that never asks for anything back. Grampy gave all of that to our family.
Thank you for everything, Grampy. Thank you for the sacrifices, the support, the lessons, and the love. We are all better because of you.
Not a goodbye, but a see you later.
Love you, Gramps ❤️
