CHIPPING LESSON

What can we all agree on with chipping?

The most common pattern I see when people are struggling with their chipping is wide stance, moving away from the target in the downswing, and head stays down long after impact. Even scarier, is some of this is often caused by the golfer’s intent!

The professional golfers shown are hitting different types of shots as evidenced by their varying ball positions and degree of shaft lean at impact.

What do they all have in common? Zero moved away from the target and ALL delivered the shaft with more lean than they had at address. Additonally, many of them carry over elements from their full swing DNA (see Ben Griffin and Rory McIlroy).

Adhere to this formula to improve your contact around the green!

PIVOT LESSON

A proper pivot involves very little lateral or side-to-side movement. Rather, it is much closer to rotating around a stable axis.

Excessive lateral movement or “sway” away from the target in the backswing, often leads to heavy and thin shots, caused from a low point behind the ball.

With a more “centered” pivot, the player is much more able to shift weight/pressure effectively and deliver a descending strike on the golf ball.

How to hit the fried egg 🍳 bunker shot!

If you are in a situation where your ball is buried into the upslope of a bunker, use these simple setup and swing keys to get you out of trouble. Most commonly, I see players set up and attempt this shot the same exact way they would for a normal bunker shot. Too much "bounce" can actually cause major inconsistencies with results from this lie. Start by setting up with the ball middle or just slightly forward in your stance. Then, close the face down all the way past square. Your stance will be relatively square to your target, depending on how much you close the face. Then, grip the club very lightly and "chop" down behind the ball with a very steep angle of attact. All of these things will help get the club under the ball and out of the bunker. Due to the conditions of the lie, the ball will come out with enough trajectory but no spin, so play for the ball to release.

Play around with your setup from these lies and observe the difference in how the ball comes out!
