Congratulations to this awesome mother and son duo! Ashley and Caleb completed their open water certifications yesterday in the chilly (ok, it was freezing) but calm waters off of Marco Island, FL. They nailed their skills and looked very comfortable in the water. Shout out to for their great charter services! Reminder: The family that dives together, thrives together!

Another fantastic wreck in the Fort Lauderdale area, is the Lady Luck. This massive ship is part of the artificial reef program, meaning it was purposely sunk to create a marine ecosystem. Local artists decorated the ship to make it look like a casino- so as you explore the wreck, you can look for the “octopus bartender” and “card shark” statues. The depth of this wreck makes is better suited for advanced divers or those pursuing their wreck or deep dive specialties. Many of Blue Dog Divers’ students have gone on to advanced certifications so they can continue their exploration, but it all starts with Open Water Certification. What are you waiting for?

Every year in August and September, there is an aggregation of Goliath Grouper in the Jupiter, FL area for their annual spawning event. They become plentiful around the many shipwrecks in this area. The timing of this aggregation is actually how they earned the nickname of “Jewfish”, since the peak of the aggregation occurs around Rosh Hashanah. These giant fish, once critically endangered, have now recovered in numbers. They can reach 8 feet in length and weigh up to 1,000 pounds! We are so fortunate to have these giants in our oceans! I highly recommend diving with the Goliaths, but this is a more advanced dive due to the depths that they prefer and the tendency for a stronger current in these areas as well. Start your dive training now, and we could be diving with the Goliaths this time next year!

Another one of Instructor Wayne’s favorite wrecks in the Fort Lauderdale area, is the Sea Emperor. The Sea Emperor is a wreck that sits upside down on the sand. It was a barge, carrying concrete culverts, and when it sank, the culverts spilled out. The pile of culverts is now known as the Aqua Zoo. Many creatures have made these concrete culverts home, including sea turtles who can frequently be found taking shelter in the area. Diving this wreck offers two unique experiences- exploring the actual wreck, where you may find a Goliath Grouper, and diving the culvert pile for other interesting creatures.

My favorite dive sites for the first and second open water certification dives are the Nursery Reef and the Wreck of the Copenhagen. The Nursery Reef is a favorite for both divers and snorkelers, due to its shallow depth. The shallow depth allows new divers to extend their bottom time on the dive, since most of us start off having a higher gas consumption than an experienced diver. There is a great variety of life on this reef, and if you are really lucky, you may spy one of the namesake residents, a Nurse Shark! The Copenhagen presents a unique opportunity to dive a wreck at shallow depths. There are some key underwater landmarks that we find on this dive, including the anchor and name plaque.
