Congratulations to Ronnie on his New Mexico public land ram! We've been hunting with Ronnie for over 16 years now. Although we've had some awesome hunts and taken a few trophies, this was one was special.
Daniel put a herd to bed the day before. With not enough light to cover the distance, they decided to pull out and wait until the morning. He mentioned to me that there was at least one really good ram in it. Day 2, the herd was in the same area. Temperature was 3Β° and breezy at daybreak. We knew the terrain would be the main obstacle for Ronnie but the hike wasn't bad. We were able to slip down right onto the herd at 230 yds. The wind was good, but the sun played hell on getting a mature ram in the scope. After a couple minutes of trying to block the sun out of his eyes, we noticed a couple of ewes climbing out from the next draw over and boom there he was. The smaller rams at 230 were irrelevant at this point. Daniel ranged this dude at 520, and he had us pinned. The sun wasn't as much of a factor and Ronnie found him easily in the scope. He really didn't want to shoot over 400, but with the round and ballistics he was shooting, I reassured him that he could do it. I said, hold high shoulder and let that fu**er sing Ronnie! Lol it was an awesome shot and the hunt was over.
Daniel and I have been blessed with hunting with Ronnie and you know, he really is like family to us. It's good to think about who helped you or influenced you when you grow as a person. We appreciate you more than you know, Ronnie!
