Race #9 of the 2018 season will be held at 10:00am tomorrow following a Skipper's meeting at 9:15am.

Last week's race saw five competitors again, but was a noteworthy affair as an alternative course was agreed to at the skipper's meeting to both suit conditions and spice things up. Boats sailed a course Start - Picket Island (VT side) - Cannon Point - Finish which provided long reaching legs and steady breezes to accompany the East and then West mountain vistas. The final race of the season could be a long-sleeved screamer! The forecast for race time tomorrow calls for South winds 13 to 15 knots, temperatures around 70F, and partly cloudy skies.

Race #8 of the 2018 season will be held tomorrow at 10:00am following a Skipper's meeting at 9:15am.
Last week's race saw only five competitors, but there was no loss of intensity as crew and skippers trimmed for speed. With winds from the NNE, we sailed the standard course in reverse taking all marks to Starboard. A nice change of pace that gave a long upwind beat to the finish. Great fun for all participants. The forecast for race time tomorrow calls for South winds at 7 knots with mild temperatures and mostly clear skies.

Joel's update from last week. Race #7 of the 2018 season will be held Sunday at 10:00am following a Skipper's meeting at 9:15am. The race is scheduled for Sunday to allow club members to attend the Mimi Harrington fleet dedication at Camp Eagle Island on Upper Saranac Lake Saturday afternoon.

With the group of skippers being quite fussy consumers of Lake Champlain's wind last week, we postponed the race to Saturday afternoon seeking a better breeze. We were rewarded with an exciting race propelled by steady wind. After a competitive start the chase was on as the fleet worked quickly to the windward mark. With such steady wind speed and direction it was all about boat handling with the opportunities to pass only coming if the boat ahead were to make a mistake. None were made and the boats rounded the windward mark, leeward mark and finished all in the same order. The forecast for Sunday calls for light and variable winds through race time, but beautiful temperatures and a clear sky.

"Race #6 of the 2018 season will be held tomorrow at 10:00 am following a Skipper's meeting at 9:15am. Last week we postponed the race to Sunday morning seeking more wind. As it is with many such high-consequence decisions in life, it didn't matter much in the end. We had sufficient wind to get around the marks with plenty of excitement, albeit at sometimes slow speeds. Strategies were challenged and leads changed with a spotty wind field and several big direction shifts to keep the skippers and crew on their toes. All of which combined to make for another fun race. The forecast for tomorrow calls for light and variable winds through race time, again...... " Joel Pero

Race #5 of the 2018 season will be held tomorrow at 10:00am following a Skipper's meeting at 9:15am.
Last week's race was made interesting when crew were treated with an opportunity to slow down and reflect on the mirror like surface of the lake. Nearly becalmed on the downwind leg, it occurred to this frustrated sailor that our boat speed could have been measured in units of "Essex-Charlotte ferryboat crossings" as the ferryboats seemed to race back and forth across the lake while we drifted. All is well that ends well and the wind eventually collected itself and brought the fleet in for our after-race meeting and refreshments. The forecast for tomorrow calls for light and variable winds with a lingering chance of rain through race time. So, we will just hope that is all wrong!

Race #4 of the 2018 season will be held tomorrow at 10:00am following a Skipper's meeting at 9:15am. Last week's race saw a season-high eight boats competing under a steady breeze and a beautiful sky. A truly enjoyable time and more than adequate consolation for those who tried, but just couldn't seem to track down the early leader as the fleet marched smartly around the course. Conditions are shaping up for another great race with the rain departing today and winds at race time are forecast from the south at seven to nine knots.

From Joel Pero, our 2nd Rear Commodore...
"Race #3 of the 2018 season will be held tomorrow at 10:00am following a Skipper's meeting at 9:15am. Last week's race was more a tale of two races with wind speeds varying between two and 12 knots. At the start and for much of the first leg winds were light with many >90 degree shifts which rewarded those skippers adhering to the old adage of "sail at the mark" and left others floating with the fisherman. With all boats still trying to get to the windward mark the breeze really filled in and suddenly sailors were hiking out and boats were taking spray over the bow from building waves! The final leg up wind to the finish was a good test of crew and rigging and made the punch and cookies taste that much better. The forecast for tomorrow, at this moment, calls for south winds 6 to 8 knots so the only sure thing will be the fun."
