Its been a week and a half since we went to the Tournament of Champions at Purina Farms in Gray Summit MO. It was a very emotional weekend, full of tears and joy for many of our teammates. Shortly before leaving, 3 members had to pull from the tournament due to an unexpected passing of a family member. Then another member tested positive for covid and wasn't sure if they could still make the trip. Once the team arrived, one of the dogs became ill, and later passed from his illness.
It was a lot to go thru in such a short period of time, but everyone was able to pull together and support each other for some great accomplishments.
While we had to pull our border collie dream team and one of our pairs teams from the Dream Team/Pairs/Singles Challenge on Friday, Hannah and Winston took 1st place in their division and Becky and Zing took 4th place in their division in Singles. Brooke with Roland and Paige with Tupelo took 1st place in their division, and honorary member Jill with her dogs Skye and Jack, who was handled by Ronda, took 3rd place in their division in Pairs.
Our Meet Me In St Louis team of Susie with Bonsai, Jill with Jack and Skye, Brooke with Raleigh and Paige with Tupelo did amazing. Jack was the veteran dog, bringing much needed experience to the team. Skye handled the anchor spot like a pro. Bonsai rocked the start dog position even though he's still on the green side. Raleigh was solid in her comeback, after an injury had kept her sidelined since Escanaba, and Tupelo ran her first ever tournament, stepping up after the loss of teammate Riggs, and did a fantastic job. Because they were a pickup team they couldn't place, but the mostly green team was able to hang with the other teams in their division. There are still some things to work on, but these dogs have bright futures.
Our Tournament of Champions team of Brooke with Roland, Becky with Zing, Karen with Forest, Jessica with Willow and Ronda with Tazer, had some struggles thru the weekend, but with some strategic planning were able to make it into the finals in their division and went home with 2nd place plaques.
Our box loader extroadinaire Tim was awarded the title of MVP Box Loader. It was an award that was well deserved. He supported our teams and helped other teams all weekend while dealing with the sudden loss of his best bud Riggs, who was supposed to be running his retirement races over the weekend.
This was the first Tournament of Champions event for many of our teammates, and while there are still things to work on, as a whole we had a pretty good showing with multiple placements.
Thank you to all our flyball friends and family who helped, encouraged and cheered us on over the years. You are a big part of our clubs success.
We are all looking forward to a little rest, then back to practicing for next year.
