Forms ~ Outdated or simply misunderstood training method?

As a beginner, the more I tried to quickly understand forms (“kata” in Japanese or “hyung” in Korean), the less I was able to grasp it. I was still years away from even forming a true concept of how these choreographed patterns could benefit me. While the benefits can be explained and may vary from teacher to teacher, true understanding only comes through consistent practice. Each person discovers and interprets those benefits in their own way, and that realization requires years of study and experience. You can ask your teacher what you will gain from this seemingly outdated training method, but the real understanding only comes through doing and experiencing it for yourself.
