Key COD Skill: The Lateral Shuffle

Our current warm features a 3D band wrapped around the torso. This helps athletes develop a felt sense of repositioning the hips and dissociating their truck so they can maintain focus in front of them.

The beauty of this band is that it penalizes athletes who don't "stay in the tunnel" with bent hips, knees, and ankles. These must all bend to LOAD...and you must LOAD to EXPLODE.

If you raise up or catch too much air, you cannot push against the band. Athletes instinctively learn the most effective position to create horizontally directed force into the ground, which is the KEY to covering space quickly.

Notice the initiation of the movement by this athlete in slide 2 where he "pops up" and the subsequent change to drop in slide 3 with a wide plant angle and instep pressure (we look for medial foot contacts) that functions as the gas pedal.

Slide 3-4 shows a nice power line from pushing leg to opposite shoulder.

This sure beats telling athletes to get low.

Give it a shot this week. 💪

The golden rule of game speed is to...

escape old space and attack new space.

This forms the foundation of how we coach, cue, and communicate.

A few exercises from this session:

Banded Shuffle In to Lateral Run Out - added resistance gives athletes a felt sense of the inside leg repositioninnig and attacking the ground

Band Resisted Straddle Jumps - encourages athletes staying low when repositioning their feet and establishing wide plant angles necessary for fast COD. Too much air and too narrow a plant angle leads to a loss of balance as in this video

Band Resisted Hip Turn and Shuffle - The band helps create space to make effective turns while dissociating the hips and shoulders

5-Yard Shuffle + Cut to Linear Sprint - works transitioning from multi-d to linear speed

Deadlifts - posterior chain strength is necessary for speed. Tracking barbell velocity with the cube adds enhances effot and output.

Are your athletes BUILT TO LAST?

That’s the frame Erica Mulholland has for every athlete coming back from an ACL injury. The tests often do little to predict readiness or screen for future risk 🫠🫠🫠

In the full episode Erica breaks down:

• The role of free play and creativity in developing movement confidence
• How to prevent burnout and overuse injuries in youth athletes
• Why strength training is the foundation of athletic durability
• How to balance intensity, recovery, and joy for sustainable performance

Every athlete wants to jump higher.
Fewer understand how to defy gravity.
Even fewer know how to train for it.

In this clip from my latest podcast with Dr. Sam Liu , break down the true determinants of jumping...what matters, what doesn’t, and what every 16-year-old athlete (and their coach) should know.

Spoiler: It’s not just about getting stronger.

It’s about timing, rhythm, and understanding how physics shows up on the court.
