A recurring theme I’ve seen on social media posts and heard from parents this season is that The Sandlot League has allowed their child to “find their people.”

For our kids, this world can often times seem like a really confusing, scary, and weird place. There are a lot of places where they are reminded of the things they “can’t do”, the ways they are “different”, or the ways they “don’t quite fit in.”

My hope with The Sandlot League is that, at least for a couple hours a week, these kids (and their families) know that they’re amongst a community of people who know what they’re going through and know that they’re seen.

But I think something bigger happened this season. At least it was the first time I had a chance to stand back and see it happen. It wasn’t just our players who found their people. Parents found other parents who understood. Siblings found other siblings who got it. Coaches and volunteers continued to be an active part of a community they might not have previously belonged to.

And our kids found teammates. Friends. People who knew their names, celebrated their hits, cheered them on, and never cared about the things that made them “different.” They just knew they belonged.

That’s what I think “finding your people” really means. Finding the people who look at you and say, “You belong here” even if they don’t have to say it out loud.

Four seasons into this crazy little baseball league, I think we’re all really starting to see what we’ve been building together. We aren’t just building a baseball league. We are building a place for people to find their people. Thank you to every family, coach, volunteer, sponsor, and community member who made this season so damn special.

And to the Sandlot League playersI hope you always remember that you found your people here and we’ll be here for you…FOR-EV-ER!

This Is Us: Year 4.

Four years ago, this was one team, 15 kids. A handful of families who came together after seeing a Facebook post that came after a few glasses of wine. Today, it’s 10 teams, 120 kids. But the numbers don’t tell the whole story.

Because The Sandlot League has become so much more than a baseball league.

It’s a community.

A place where kids get to run the bases, celebrate the little things and big accomplishments, dance between innings, high-five their teammates and laugh beyond the last pitch. A place where nobody has to worry about being “different. Nobody has to explain themselves. Nobody has to apologize for who they are. They just get to be themselves. And in doing that, these kids inspire more people than they probably realize.

They remind us that baseball can be about more than winning. That competition can make room for kindness. That inclusion doesn’t mean making everyone fit the same mold. And that sometimes the greatest victories have nothing to do with the scoreboard.
We’ve watched 15 kids become 120.
We’ve watched teams become friendships.
We’ve watched families become a community.
And every year, we’re reminded that the best part of Sandlot isn’t what happens on the field.
It’s what happens because of it.
None of this happens without the incredible coaches, volunteers and families who show up, cheer louder, help more, and give these kids a place where they belong.

So here’s to Year 4.
To the laughs, the high-fives, the dance breaks, the cheers from the crowd and all the moments we’ll never forget.
Most of all, here’s to every kid who has ever stepped onto these field and reminded us exactly what it means to be yourself.
This is us.
And we’re just getting started

We are incredibly grateful to The DICK'S Sporting Goods Foundation and DICK'S Sporting Goods for awarding The Sandlot Baseball League a $10,000 grant!

The Sandlot exists because we believe every kid should have the opportunity to experience the joy of playing baseball, regardless of ability, disability, or the barriers that might otherwise keep them from the field.

That’s why this partnership means so much to us. The DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation’s mission to inspire and enable youth sports participation, while breaking down the barriers that keep kids from playing, aligns so closely with what we are trying to build here at The Sandlot.

This $10,000 grant will directly help us continue providing a completely free, adaptive baseball experience for our players and their families. It helps us provide equipment, create an inclusive field environment, support our incredible volunteers and coaches, and most importantly, give more kids the chance to put on a jersey, grab a bat and be part of a team.

DICK’S believes that sports can build confidence, character, connection and lifelong memories. We see that happen at The Sandlot every single week.

Thank you to The DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation for believing in what we are doing and investing in these kids. We’re incredibly thankful to have you in our corner.
