Learning Judo is a game changer!

Every match and every self-defense situation starts on the feet. For most modern Jiu-Jitsu practitioners, our ground game is solid, but the standing exchange can be hesitant, inconsistent, and under-developed.

That changes here. Shoshin Jiu Jitsu is officially launching our new Judo Program, jump-starting with a series of workshops designed to turn your stand-up grappling into a decisive weapon.

We are proud to welcome Akishige Kuraishi Sensei (4th Dan) directly from Japan to lead our two-hour workshop. You will experience Judo exactly as it is trained in Japan: mastering high-percentage throws, unbalancing (kuzushi), authentic dojo etiquette & culture, etc.

Let's be real- we know we don't want to be on bottom Mount, but we need to train for the worst case scenario of what to do if and when we find ourselves there - whether on the street, in sparring, or in competition.

At Shoshin, we focus on training intelligent ways to use leverage, timing, and good technique to overcome size and strength. That's what is all about!

Headlocks are a real problem.

We prefer to make good posture and escape without going to the ground, but sometimes we can't because we're late. Tani otoshi can be a good takedown to counter the headlock when our posture is broken, and our opponent has a very wide base.

Control is key!

There are a variety of ways to prevent someone from regaining their guard, but one effective one that we teach in our Shoshin JJ Core Classes is transitioning from North control to kuzure Kesa gatame.

Live and learn.

One thing about jiu jitsu is that we will make mistakes, and often those mistakes are punished in an instant. The question is how quickly can you learn the lesson that the mistake is trying to teach you?

One thing I've been proud of as a coach is that our team is willing to get in there and make the mistakes. You have to do that if you want to get better. It's not the fun part, but it's the most valuable part.

So make sure you're always looking at your mistakes for what they are- your single best opportunity to learn something!

In this case we have Kenny Hammer going against Daniel J O'Hara which is mistake number one (just kidding 😂). Kenny overextends not seeing the loop choke setup. No worries, it was a good move, and now we learned how to do a loop choke!

Good stuff guys, this is why we challenge ourselves. 👊🏼👊🏼
