A reminder as haying and mowing season continues: fawns have two instincts when danger approaches: they run, or they freeze.

When a fawn freezes, it will press itself as low to the ground as possible and remain completely still. Unfortunately, that natural survival behavior can make them nearly invisible in tall grass, especially from the seat of a bush hog or mower.

This tiny girl was accidentally clipped yesterday by a bush hog and is now fighting through a severe head injury.

Please take a few extra minutes to walk fields, check tall grass, and be extra cautious before starting outdoor work this time of year. A quick scan could save a life.

Wildlife and farming often share the same spaces, and a little extra awareness can make all the difference. ❤️

Update: this little one is recieving veterinary care and is on medicines to alleviate pain. She has a very guarded prognosis.

He's been sleeping in the truck since March. It's September now. He calculated once what he's spent on entry fees, gas, and gas station food versus what he's won, and the math doesn't work yet. But he doesn't believe the math is the whole story.

The whole story includes things you can't put in a spreadsheet: what he knows about himself now that he didn't know in February, the way his body has gotten stronger in ways that have nothing to do with exercise, the eight or nine people on this circuit who have become something like family across thirty-two events and a lot of long drives. He is twenty years old. He has a truck and a horse and an entry number and six events left in the season.

He finishes the sandwich. He looks at the arena. He is exactly where he wants to be. The math will catch up. He's not worried about the math yet. 🤠
