I bet you didnā€™t know that in grad school, my career plan was to work with kiddos as an animal assisted therapistā€¦ šŸ¶

That very quickly morphed into working with neurodivergent women + nonbinary adults navigating eating disorders and body dysmorphia.

There is so much intersectionality in these populations and not enough providers who specialize in both āš ļø

I am a fat-positive, anti-diet, LGBTQIA+, and gender-affirming clinician aligned with Health at Every SizeĀ® (HAES) and Intuitive Eating principles.

I have found that a combination of talk and somatic therapy from a neuro-affirming, social justice and trauma-informed lens has been the most effective for my clients.

And, I quickly became the therapist I didnā€™t know I had always needed myself šŸ«¶šŸ¼

Itā€™s deeply disorienting to continue to watch creators post their OOTDs while saying nothing about whatā€™s happening in our shared reality. And harder to know people are doubling and tripling down their support of fascism. šŸ˜ž

The disconnect is heartbreaking and disturbing. It asks your nervous system to hold too much at once.

So many of my clients this week have shared how helpless they feel. As if they canā€™t do something big or public or undeniably ā€œmeaningful,ā€ then what theyā€™re doing doesnā€™t count.

It does. šŸ”„

Keep showing up.
Keep naming injustice.
Donate to causes doing real work.
Volunteer in your community.
Go to protests when you can.
Call your representatives.
Shovel your neighborā€™s sidewalk.
Help out at your kidā€™s school.
Put your phone down and talk to the people in your life.

None of this is small.
Collective care has always been built this way. šŸ’ŖšŸ¼

I wasnā€™t trained to talk about politics in therapy school. In fact, we were told to avoid it at all costs. But the longer Iā€™ve worked in this field (and lived in this world), the clearer itā€™s become:

šŸ›‹ļø the reasons people end up on my couch are always political.

Sure, theyā€™re struggling with anxiety, stress, body image, what have you. But when we peel back the layers, we see those struggles arenā€™t happening in a vacuum. Theyā€™re shaped by systems and policies.

šŸ˜„Feeling anxious? It makes sense when you look at rising authoritarianism, attacks on reproductive rights, and the constant fear so many marginalized groups live under.

šŸ’°Stressed because money is tight? Wages have been stagnant for decades while the cost of living (housing, groceries, gas, healthcare, childcare) keeps increasing. Thatā€™s political.

šŸ‘™Struggling with your body image? Corporations pour billions into diet culture and beauty standards to keep us insecure, distracted, and spending money. Add that to fatphobic healthcare policies and lack of access to inclusive care ā€¦ itā€™s political.

šŸ§ Youā€™re neurodivergent? Neurodivergence itself isnā€™t a disability, but in a society built on productivity, rigid 9-to-5 schedules, and systems designed only for neurotypical brains, it becomes one. Imagine trying to survive in a world that isnā€™t designed for you to succeed.

As a baby therapist, I never would have guessed Iā€™d be talking about politics in the therapy room. But ignoring the political roots of mental health would mean ignoring the truth: our struggles are connected to the systems we live in.

šŸ©·Healing isnā€™t just personal. Itā€™s also collective, and itā€™s also resistance.
