We’re in The New York Times. 🗞️

A quiet dream became a story worth telling — our centuries-old Japanese kominka, dismantled beam by beam and rebuilt under the wide skies of eastern Oregon.

Tatami underfoot. Shoji filtering the morning light. Timber that has already lived a hundred lifetimes, now beginning another.

Preserving Japan’s heritage homes isn’t just architecture. It’s memory. It’s craft. It’s a promise carried across an ocean.

Endless thanks to Tim Hornyak and for sharing this chapter with the world — and to every hand, including , that helped bring this home home.

Overwhelm doesn’t come from having too much to do. It comes from scattered attention.

When your mind jumps from one thing to the next, it ruminates and feels heavier.

A Kaiseki-style Japanese dinner at Kominka naturally helps your mind settle. Not just because it’s delicious—but because each dish draws your attention to the five senses: color, texture, aroma, sound, and flavor.

When you notice each sensory detail, your focus sharpens—not in tension, but in a calm, alert state.

You are fully in the zone, relaxed yet fully present. You’re not multitasking. Your thoughts slow down. You feel more connected, and your mind naturally clears.

A mindful, sensory-rich dinner helps calm your mental loops.

When your mind settles, clarity returns.

Calm your mind with tea. Not symbolically. Mechanically.

Tea brings mindful movement, sensory focus, and single-point attention.
Attention anchors. The brain's biological reactivity decreases.

The brain cannot continue ruminating on the past or worrying about the future when attention is fully engaged in the five senses.

Tea is not just relaxation—it’s a shift in mind state, from contraction to expansion, from mental noise to clarity.

Try it. When the loop pauses, clarity returns.

I hear this from leaders more than anything else. Not "I'm overwhelmed." Not "I need better systems."

"I miss the version of me who could decide — and move on."

That version of you didn't disappear.

Your brain has a built-in survival system. It evolved to scan for threats, protect you from danger, and keep you alive.

But it can't tell the difference between a charging animal — the primary threat of the primitive era — and the high-stakes decisions you face today.

Under pressure, the primitive survival brain takes over — and the part of your brain that thinks clearly, decides calmly, and moves forward with certainty?

It gets crowded out.

This isn't a confidence problem. It's not a strategy problem. It's not even a stress problem.

It's mechanics.

And mechanics can be learned.

When you understand how your mind actually works — not motivational theory, actual mechanics — something shifts.

Decisions become cleaner. The noise quiets. You start to recognize yourself again.

That's what I teach.
