Greater Yellowstone Adventure Series

Greater Yellowstone Adventure Series The Greater Yellowstone Adventure Series consists of six races hosted over the first three weekends in July. If not, it's time to step up and toe the line.

When's the last time you did something for the first time? For example, have you ever run the Highest Road Marathon on Planet Earth? Have you ever run the Second Longest Downhill Road Marathon on Planet Earth? How many duathlons have you done where you start in one town (Ennis) and finish at the territorial capitol of Montana (Virginia City)? Have you ever done a point-to-point Olympic Distance Tr

iathlon that starts with a lake swim and finishes in front of the infamous Pony Bar? How a bicycling race with a 50 mile uphill and an elevation gain of 4,646 feet? If you can answer yes to even one of these questions, you're awesome.

Happy 4th of July weekend to all!

This week’s Greater Yellowstone Adventure Series newsletter talks about America’s Best Idea – Public Land. It began in earnest about 125 years ago thanks to a wonderful man called President Teddy Roosevelt.

Thanks to Teddy, we have a series of beautiful races in Southwest Montana. Have a read.

See you at the races.

For the past 19 years, I have had a side career that has greatly impacted my life, my son’s life, and over the past 19 years the lives of hundreds of people who travelled to Southwest Montana to take on a great challenge. This all started in 2008 with the Inaugural Madison Marathon which featured a marathon route on top of the Gravelly Mountain range near Yellowstone National Park. The route averages 9,000 feet in elevation. Imagine running a marathon that close to Heaven.

This single race spawned several others. Today, we are the only seven-event race series in the State of Montana and probably the only one in the western region of the United States.

Curious? Have a read of this week’s newsletter.

Have a great weekend.

A Happy Father’s Day (slightly belated) to all the fathers of the world.

Several years ago, I wrote a short story about the love between a father and a son and the power of sports. I have been a sports race director for 19 years. I have been a full-time writer for more than five years. Most importantly, I have been a father for 25 years.

I hope the Dads of the world, along with the Moms, runners, sports enthusiasts, and anyone else who loves a good story, will click on this link to read the latest newsletter of the Greater Yellowstone Adventure Series.

I also hope to see you this summer in Southwest Montana at one of our events.

Thanks

Here is an essay on the walls that as****es put in front of us and, more dire, that we put in front of ourselves.

Do you want to see a world full of walls or full of bridges?

I am race director (and a writer). I choose bridges.

Please, take a minute to read our latest newsletter from the Greater Yellowstone Adventure Series.

For 12 years, we have offered the only Double Marathon in the state of Montana. We're one of a very few double options in the United States. We might be the only double marathon option in the world that offers a Saturday route that averages 9,000 feet in elevation followed by a Sunday route that has a net drop of 3,500 feet.

Depression is a global killer. One estimate suggests that 280 million to 330 million people worldwide are experiencing depression at any given time. The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 4 percent of the global population has depression. That’s a lot of people. While the meds for the disease are getting better, they don’t work for everyone, and not everyone can afford them. One antidote that is completely free is running. Give this week’s Greater Yellowstone Adventure Series newsletter a read. Running can be a Secret Weapon to fight depression.

Have a wonderful week ahead.

I will miss watching the opening monologue of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. I like funny, but I like smart funny even more. Colbert was a smart funny kind of guy. He’ll be missed.

For this week’s Greater Yellowstone Adventure Series (GYAS) newsletter, we pull out a schtick from the recycle bin of Colbert’s predecessor, David Letterman. This is his Top 10 list. In the spirit of The Late Show, we offer the Top 10 reasons everyone reading this short post should travel to Southwest Montana for a GYAS event this coming July and September.

Give it a reader and let me know if one of the 10 reasons resonates with you. I hope one of them does.

See you in July in Montana.

Hey Marathoners,

In the entire state of Montana, there is only one place where you can run a double marathon. In the western United States, there are only a few options and some of them are back-to-back marathons on the same route. In the entire United States, there are ZERO double marathons that are back-to-back, at high elevation, on two different routes, and offer panoramic views.

Well..... that's not exactly true. There is one double marathon option in Montana. Each marathon is on a separate route. Each route offers incredible vistas where you can see for 100 miles on a clear day. But, here's the deal. You have to run at 9,000 feet above sea level. That's how Double Marathoners in Montana do it.

Check out the details and sign up at www.YellowstoneAdventureSeries.com

When's the last time you did something totally slap-ass crazy?

I hope to see you in July.
