n self-defense and discipline. History of Shodin Ji Do Karate
Shodin Ji Do Karate comes from northern Okinawa. According to Master Frank Royster it is the ancient form of modern Shorin-Ryu. Shodinji and Shorinji are interchangeable in Japanese, both are pronounced the same. It was brought to the United States by Master Frank Royster. Master Royster trained under Master Hirosh*to Yama of Nago, Okinawa. When Shorin-Ryu "westernized" and began to change and evolve into modern Shorin-Ryu, Master Royster and Master Yama split from the school to keep the traditions that had been passed to them as pure as possible. Master Royster returned to the United States and settled for a period in Portales New Mexico, near Cannon Air Force Base, where he taught the art as it was passed from him to many students. When Master Royster left New Mexico, Dr. Robert Taylor took over his classes at ENMU. Ron Haggerton studied briefly under Master Royster and later under Dr. Taylor. Haggerton began instructing in Hobbs. Crowell trained under Mr. Haggerton before moving here and starting her school in 2017. I took over the school in 2022, serving as an assistant instructor and Sensei. Copied from: http://shodinjido.com/about_us
In addition to strengthening our bodies and learning physical discipline, we also believe it is vital to learn spiritual discipline. To help us focus our hearts and minds, we begin each class with a Scripture reading and a prayer.
