Fourteen years ago today, I was awarded the Purple Heart — a symbol of sacrifice from an event that would change my life forever.

This week as we remember 9/11 and witness heartbreaking division around the world, I feel a deep sense of urgency to share a simple truth: We NEED More Healing.

Having seen the realities of war, I know how precious life is and how damaging hatred can be. I would be remissed if I didn’t say there’s evil in this world and it can be very violent at times.

It’s painful to watch today’s sentiment— people become so divided when empathy could bridge those gaps… but what does empathy even mean in a world constantly filled with but-isms?

Someone trying to take your life will change you. Having to take another persons life will change you. Paying the ultimate sacrifice will change the life of every person who knows you.

That’s where I think empathy lives in this equation. If you haven’t experienced any of those things first hand— spewing hatred and celebrating the demise of people you simply disagree with is just inhumane. If you haven’t experienced the reality someone else is sharing with you its truly difficult to understand their pain and struggles.

If there can be one takeaway its this— strive to heal rather divide. Give yourself the chance to listen before you speak, and the space to think, “I didn’t think about that…maybe I’m wrong”

20 years ago if you told me I’d dedicate my future to a life of service, I would’ve laughed in your face. Fast forward and 16+ years in, here I am continuing on this path where I stand steadfast, ready to answer the call. Military service isn’t for everyone, but being of service is something we should all be part of.

⚠️ TRIGGER WARNING ⚠️

This isn’t a direct attack — but if it feels like one you may be part of the problem. Exercise demonstration and workout creation isn’t where the buck stops as a coach or trainer. If there’s a clear difference between how you demonstrate something and the way its performed its one of three things:

If the way it’s executed by a client is exactly how you performed it, but it’s still incorrect or poorly performed— then its a personal deficiency in your ability to perform the movement in its correct state.

If the demonstration is correct but the ex*****on is incorrect, then it’s either a lack of awareness of how to coach and correct it or inability to pick up on the fact that something is off*.

OR any one of those can be true and you don’t care enough to fix it or to educate yourself, then you have poor standards.

This should be the standard practice however it’s seen constantly throughout the industry. Prioritize excellence, and lead your clients the way they need you to!
