Functional movement patterns are the foundation to a good exercise program.

The 7 primary movement patterns are

Squat: Uses muscles of the lower extremity to assist your ability to access objects below arms reach.

Lunge: Serves a similar purpose to the squat but utilizes muscles of the legs alternatively.

Push: Uses chest, shoulders, and arms to move an object away from your body.

Pull: Serves the opposite purpose of a push by moving an object closer to your body. Uses of the upper back, shoulders, and arms are involved.

Bend: Uses abdominal muscles to hinge forward at the hips to enable the body to access objects on the ground. The lower back muscles are responsible for returning the body to a neutral standing position.

Twist: Serves the purpose of rotating the body to reach objects behind or to the side of your body.

Gait: Synchronizes movements of the upper and lower body to set the entire standing body in to motion; A.K.A. walking.
