Ranger and I have gone a lot of miles, spent a lot of nights together, and caught 1 or 2 deer together. Last night was the second deer of the year I’ve let him help recover. It was nice to see him get excited at a bay again but I think after that, I am going to retire him. He is getting worn out and slow so I feel like it’s time for him to officially pass on the torch. I am going to miss hearing his bawl when he jumps a deer and his bay bark that will make your hair stand up. That dog has taught me more than I have taught him about tracking. He was a one of a kind dog.

It’s hard to beat finding a young hunters first deer! There was no sign anywhere down the trail and the dogs had a real tough time trailing this deer but almost 2 hours, 1 broke bay, and 900 yards later this young man was able to get his hands on his buck! Thank the good Lord for letting me live the life I love!

This buck and Ruby have a short history with each other but I’m glad it’s finished and it ended in our favor. Almost a week ago today we got the call to trail this deer based in the situation I decided to turn Ruby loose on it by herself. Ruby trailed the deer probably half a mile then jumped it and I let her run the deer until she just absolutely had no gas left in her tank. I knew we weren’t going to catch the deer that day but I just kept hoping if I let her go a little longer we may get lucky. The deer showed back up on camera 3 days later and fast forward to tonight, he was bow shot again. I was prepared for it to be a challenge and took Ruby, ranger, and Rocky. The entire drive I was trying to formulate a game plan and finally settled on turning Ruby loose by herself and holding the other dogs back in case we needed reinforcements. Ruby decided she didn’t need any reinforcements and sealed the deer by herself on this true south texas stud of a deer. Words cannot explain how grateful I am for dogs the good Lord has given me and the life he allows me to live.

We’ve started season off on a steady pace with several recoveries! This particular was shot far back with a bow and Ruby was trailing with ease until the deer got jumped by coyotes. After that it took patience on my end and perseverance on her end but she finally got the mess lined out and found this stud of a buck! I can’t think the good Lord enough for the life he lets me live and the dogs he gave me!

Between the heat, snakes, and lack of hunting there’s a good chance this was my last trail until deer season and honestly, I’m not just real upset about that. These dogs need a break and trailing in this heat is a no win situation. You either run a very high risk of getting a dog killed or not being able to trail due to poor scent conditions. This was a fun trail though, Ruby made quick work of this nilgai and had him bayed for us to seal the deal. We may need to work on her picture taking though. I can’t thank my wife enough for letting me go chase these dogs around and I definitely can’t forget to give all the glory to our good Lord for giving me@the opportunities he has!

I had just finished delivering some feed and reloading my trailer to deliver some more feed when I got the call for an eland! I loaded a couple dogs in the truck because I couldn’t decide who I wanted to use but I ended up letting Ranger have some fun! I’ll never get tired of hearing that dog sound off when he jumps an animal! Thank you lord for letting me live the life I love!

A few weeks ago and I were out of town and my parents stayed at the ranch watching our kids. I got a call for for a deer I was fairly confident was findable. and I asked the hunters to give me a minute to make a plan. I called my parents and asked if my dad felt comfortable taking Ruby to look for this deer. Needless to say this was a big deal for me since nobody has ever used my dogs except for me and I was 2 hours away. My dad ended up taking Ruby and found the deer a few hundred yards from last blood. All the Glory to God for letting me live the life I love!

We ended our 2024 with a bang! Our good friends at called us about black buck last night. As soon as I could get back to the house I loaded up some dogs and headed to them. On the way there I was trying to make a battle plan with which dogs I wanted to use. When I showed up I seized to use the veterans, Ruby and Ranger due to the lack of sign and my amount of trust in those two dogs. We cut the track and they took off, jumped the black buck, and bayed him right by a road. I can’t thank the good Lord enough for letting me live the life I love!

It’s always an honor to assist in recovering a kids first deer! I let Ruby and Rusty loose about midnight on this trail, it took them a minute to line it out. Ruby jumped him and after a couple hundred yard race, this young man was able to put his hands on his deer! Thank you lord for letting me live the life I love!
