Southern Lyon County (Olpe HS & Hartford HS) baseball is headed to the first state tournament appearance in program history after capturing the their first-ever regional championship with a dominant 16-1 win over Central Heights. The co-op between Olpe and Hartford (both in same school district) has just 13 players on the roster, making the postseason run even more impressive for one of the smaller baseball programs in Kansas.
The Southern Lyon County school district has seen tremendous athletic success over the years on both the boys and girls side, and now baseball is adding another chapter to that tradition. Co-ops have become increasingly common across small-school Kansas athletics, allowing neighboring schools or schools within the same district or community areas to continue competing and building successful programs together that may not have enough to have a team of their own.
Southern Lyon County enters state at 18-5 on the season with a balanced roster that has produced both offensively and on the mound throughout the spring.
Brayden Lienemann has been one of the top hitters in the lineup, batting .563 with 40 hits and a 1.000 slugging percentage. Ryker Windle added a .518 average with 29 hits, while Henry Tajchman hit .484 with 30 hits. Eli Markowitz (.450), Jaiden Kurzen (.433) and John Musick (.411) have also helped power one of the deeper offenses in 2-1A baseball.
On the mound, Kael Wagaman has led the way with a 1.81 ERA over 27 innings while striking out 30 hitters and posting a 4-1 record. Brayden Lienemann added a 3.50 ERA with 27 strikeouts in 20 innings, while Ryker Windle logged 30 strikeouts across 22.2 innings pitched.
Now the Southern Lyon County co-op will head to the first state baseball tournament in program history looking to continue an already historic season for the combined Olpe-Hartford squad.
