Spartan Boxing Club competed at Turner KS over the weekend. We took 3 boxers to an event at one of the nations biggest, most decorated boxing clubs in the country. Turner Boxing Academy, the gym where I started my coaching career.
15 year old, 122 lbs, Arlis Sieberns - 26 year old 138 lbs, Daniel Herrera-Tabares - 21 year old Heavyweight Caleb Hulbutta
Caleb came home with a new championship belt after putting in a solid performance and securing a unanimous decision in his 4th bout. Caleb once again showed improvement. Caleb has been jumping at every chance he gets to compete. Getting sharper each time out.
Daniel tasted the other side of victory for the first time in his career. Going into the bout undefeated. We dropped a very tough split decision in a crowd pleasing scrap. I’m happy with my guys performance. He went out there, looked great, performed well and put on an exciting match. Fighting comes naturally to Daniel. That is a great quality to have but can also cost you at times. We saw a couple of areas to improve on so next time out.
Arlis was another gut twisting decision that went the other way. Arlis was facing a more experienced and much larger opponent. I don’t know if I’d be exaggerating saying we gave up around a foot in height. Everyone in that arena probably had the other guy winning based on appearances. They left that show with a reminder of the old phrase. “Don’t judge a book by the cover”. It really stung when the we didn’t get the decision. It’s rough when your guy goes out there and gives you everything he’s got. It’s part of the game. Arlis can now see how much he’s improved the last 6 months. He belongs in there, with anyone in his division.
4 Emporia MMA competitors gave the Emporia heavy crowd at the Ameristar Casino all the excitement and thrill they could. As a team they went 3-1 with 3 finishes.
Trenton Carol win via submission, Pierce Moore (former Spartan boxer turned MMA) win via KO! And still undefeated as a pro! Logan Blow wins via submission in the 1st round. Starting of his pro career with an impressive 3-0, all wins by stoppage.
