Pictures I’ve been posting lately show stereotypical means of exercise-but exercise can encompass many things. When dealing with injuries, a decrease in range of motion, and/ or muscle imbalances, tasks of daily living may become a chore. Here we’re practicing pulling items from the kitchen cabinet and putting them back while avoiding an excessive lean backwards. The goal is to take pressure off of Dee’s lower back while she’s performing overhead tasks. (In the last picture, note the backwards lean while reaching)

The obstacle course is back! This year we brought in a bosu ball to really throw off her balance- but as per usual, Dee crushed it! The second picture shows a way to utilize both the bosu, and TRX, to optimize unilateral work and challenge balance!

This is a client who has always stuck with me, I trained her for close to 2 years while she was on hospice with Parkinson’s. She was wheelchair bound until I showed up for her training sessions a couple times a week. We would work really hard to stand and get some exercises/ steps in during the hour that I was there. Now, she loved animals and nature, always brought it up in every conversation, so our main goal during our session was to get outside of the nursing home. They had a courtyard that housed a garden and a pond full of fish. On our first lap, I helped her sneak some tomatoes off the vine and into her walker. Then, at the end of our second lap, we’d toss some fish food in the pond. She would stand at the railing watching the fish eat, her eyes full of excitement as their mouths broke the surface of the water. Every session following she’d ask if we could go feed the fish. It was then that I realized how important this routine became to her. It gave her a feeling of independence and freedom doing what she enjoyed (even when I was still there to assist). If I didn’t show up for our sessions, and if no one had hired us to work with her, she would’ve lived out her days in her chair parked in front of the TV. That’s when my passion really grew for working with the aging population. Independence is important, doing what you want to do, when you want to do it, is important. Not living in fear of falling is important. Being strong and confident is important. Everyone deserves the ability to do things that make them happy.

Guess what day it was! 1-on-1 training with Jan (and Petey) again today! The goal today was to incorporate light movement, balance and coordination exercises, and stretches to help alleviate stiffness and soreness. Throwing scarves, chair stretches, and balloon booping (very scientific term) were used to accomplish some of these goals.

1-on-1 training from this past summer. Dee wanted to feel strong and confident while staying at her summer cottage. We started our sessions with a cardio warm-up and then moved on to building strength and stability (Treadmill or bike, cable machine, balance pads, exercise ball, TRX trainer etc.). We tested some of those skills with obstacle courses in her kitchen!
