Wild rice is not rice. It is an aquatic grass, Zizania palustris, native to the shallow lakes and slow rivers of the Upper Midwest, and Minnesota is the center of it.

The Ojibwe name is manoomin, and it is not a crop in the ordinary sense. Ojibwe migration accounts describe moving west from the Atlantic over generations, told to travel until they found the place where food grows on water. Manoomin was that food, and finding it marked the end of the journey. It carries spiritual and ceremonial weight that has nothing to do with commerce.

Traditional harvest is still done the same way. Two people in a canoe, one poling through the beds with a forked pole, the other using two cedar knockers to bend the stalks over the boat and tap the grain loose. The rice that misses the canoe reseeds the bed for next year, which is the point. The method is designed so the harvest sustains itself.

State law protects it. Harvesting on public waters requires a license, dates are set by the DNR, mechanical harvesting is prohibited, and the equipment is regulated down to the size and weight of the knockers.

That hand-harvested lake rice is what people mean by true wild rice. It cooks in about half an hour, has a nutty, smoky taste from parching over fire, and the grains vary in color and length because nature is inconsistent.

The stuff in most grocery stores is different. Cultivated paddy rice, grown in flooded fields, machine harvested, uniform black and shiny, and it takes an hour to cook. It is fine. It is not the same thing.

Minnesota made wild rice the official state grain in 1977.

Wild rice soup with cream and mushrooms is the standard preparation here.

Buy the hand-harvested if you can find it. Support the people harvesting it.

Small business owners in northeastern Minnesota told their state legislators Friday that the wildfires that have been burning in and around the Boundary Waters for almost a month have had a “disastrous” impact on their bottom lines. One canoe outfitter says he lost 98 percent of his revenue to c...

Went to a long meeting with the Forest Service and Incident Command for our “July Lightning Event” aka: 77,000 acres burning with 17 fires. Though over 1,000,000 acres (90%) of our Boundary Waters Wilderness is NOT on fire, because of its remote nature, and extremely dry current conditions, all wilderness entry points remain closed. So far, we have not been ordered to evacuate ….. unlike our friends and fellow outfitters on Moose Lake, Snowbank, and Lake One.

When the Forest Service determines it safe to return to the interior wilderness lakes, we will be ready to go. We are continuing to pack equipment for those parties who’s permits are still valid for future dates.

Thank you, all, for your continued support, patience, and your calls and notes of encouragement with best wishes. It’s nice to know our efforts to provide top quality wilderness experiences, are cherished memories for our guests and clients.

Of the 17 fires in the Superior National Forest, four are within the BWCAW …. about 75,000 acres as of Saturday evening. The closest fire of 4200 acres (the Camp Fire) is about 4-5 miles north of the base. The Forest Service is canceling out permits 4-6 days in advance, step by step, wait and see when it rains again. Canada’s Quetico Park is also closed. As soon as it is safe to again head into our 2,300,000 acres of greatest canoe area on earth, we are ready to take care of your outfitting needs. We’ll
keep you advised.
