“The fans went crazy after that win, I was partying for a long, long time after that win.

“The second fight, I was up to around 196 pounds and my manager said I had to go back to Panama right now, that the second fight was signed. I said, 'are you crazy!’ - I knew I couldn't fight again so soon. But I had a month to lose all that weight. I starved myself, I pushed myself so hard. In sparring, I felt each punch from my sparring partners, they felt like rocks. I was ill and I felt bad. I crawled to the weighing scale. I then had a cup of coffee and some water and I felt sick.

“Later I saw members from Leonard's team loosening the ropes in the ring, in the corners. In the fight, when I had Leonard in the corner, he was able to get away from my punches. There were a lot of shady things in that fight. Also, I never said the words, 'No Mas. That was made up by American commentator Howard Cosell. He didn't like me very much, because I never gave him many interviews so he made that up. I waved my arms in the air, yes, but I never said anything. How could Cosell have heard me anyway, from all the way across the ring where he was.

“I had really bad stomach cramps and I thought I would lose the fight, then get the third fight and make sure I was in top shape to kick a**.”

Marvelous Marvin Hagler and Thomas Hearns beat each other up for three rounds of insane mayhem, and Hagler scored a 3rd round TKO while making his 10th defense of the middleweight championship at the Caesars Palace Outdoor Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada in 1985.

Hagler, the reigning middleweight champion since 1980, was a dominant force and a terrifying champion when at his best. But he'd nearly cleaned out the division. That's where Hearns came in.

Hearns was 40-1, and his only loss came against "Sugar" Ray Leonard. After his loss to Leonard, Hearns went up a division and won a title from Wilfred Benítez before scoring a frightening KO of Roberto Durán. The victory over Durán helped push the hype for a potential Hagler-Hearns war, and the fight was finalized by late 1984.

The matchup carried both hardcore and general appeal, making it a true superfight. But while many superfights simply don't measure up to their hype, this far exceeded what anyone hoped for.

Hagler and Hearns went at one another recklessly at the opening bell, with Hearns landing right hands that opened Hagler up and appeared to briefly wobble him before he pinned Hearns in the corner a few times. It was indeed a war, but a world class war.

The crowd of about 15,000 knew it was extraordinary. Hearns broke his right hand on Hagler's head at some point in round 1, but he used his jab to control much of round 2. But Hagler's pressure was stifling and his aggression never stopped.

Hagler's cut was bad, though, and after the 3rd began the fight was paused for a doctor to examine it. The fight continued and Hagler rocked Hearns with a right hand that sent him back and nearly jogging away. A follow up right hand put him down hard. Hearns somehow got to his feet, but it was stopped as he wobbled about.

"I said I was going to go through him like Pac-Man and I did," Hagler said. "I figured I had to take some punches to get some in. But he had to take some too."

The bout was voted "Fight of the Year," with round 1 the "Round of the Year."
