To whom it may concern,
I live in Elkton Oregon a small community (population 200) on the banks of the Umpqua river, where my wife and I have owned and operated Arlene’s Cafe& General store for 21 years. I also own and operate Elkton Outfitters guide service for the past 18 years.
The recent rumors/ proposal to close the Umpqua paint a very disconcerting picture. The shear number of fishermen that frequent our establishment during a normal season is what keeps us open in the winter months for our community. We speak to customers throughout fall season that have traveled from Idaho, Montana, Wyoming etc…. to come to Wi******er Bay to fish for fall salmon. I usually run 25-30 fishing excursions between July & October which is a large portion of my income. Now I couldn’t even begin to imagine the whole picture of what this will cost the community and surrounding, but I do know this will impact me and my family deeply. I also know that my 25-30 excursions bring people to the area where they spend money with not only me but many other businesses including but not limited to, hotels, restaurants, canneries, convenience stores, Wineries, Rv parks, state and local parks and these people also support the department of fish and wildlife !!
In closing, I believe we could make a compromise of a 1 wild fish per day 2 per annum, barbless hooks and the Umpqua above Scottsburg bridge should be closed to salmon fishing due to high water temperatures from July through September.
Thanks
Darrell Moore
