A local Track & Field legend! RIP Mr Long!
Sad news out of Rockingham County as Ed Long Jr. passed away on Tuesday at his home at the age of 91.
Last year, the Rockingham Recreation Center facility, located at Rockingham Park at the Crosroads, was named in his honor.
Long grew up in Augusta County and graduated from Weyers Cave High School, where he played basketball and baseball, before studying agriculture education at Virginia Tech.
After college graduation, he went into the United States Air Force as a second lieutenant and completed pilot training while getting certified in several aircrafts, with the largest being the B25.
Long and his wife, Mary, have three sons — Tim, Chip and Charles — and he went on to teach and become principal at Elkton High School after getting his master’s in education administration from James Madison.
He also played an instrumental role in the start-up of Massanutten Vocational Technical Center.
When it comes to athletes, Long was involved in several ways across a variety of sports.
He spent time announcing football games at Spotswood High for 30 years and was a clerk for track and field events at district, regional and Virginia High School League state events during that same time.
He helped install the first lights at the SHS baseball field while a member of the Cross Keys Ruritan Club and ran a morning basketball clinic for Rockingham County Parks and Rec on Saturday morning.
After college graduation, he went into the United States Air Force as a second lieutenant and completed pilot training while getting certified in several aircraft, with the largest being the B25.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family and everyone impacted by this.
