The Scottfield Theatre Company Brings “Meet Me In St. Louis” to Life at the Havre de Grace Opera House
Step into the warmth, wit, and heart of turn-of-the-century St. Louis as Scottfield Theatre Company opens its production of Meet Me In St. Louis at the Havre de Grace Opera House. Directed and choreographed by Becky Titelman with musical direction by Reenie Codelka, this production revives the beloved 1944 film that made Judy Garland a legend while introducing its charm to a new generation.
The musical includes seven of the best-loved songs from the film, plus ten additional Martin and Blane songs written specially for the stage. Memorable musical numbers include “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” “The Boy Next Door,” “The Trolley Song,” and “Whenever I’m with You.” Each is delivered with warmth and polish, filling the theater with the timeless melodies that generations have loved.
At the center of this glowing ensemble is Erin Acerno as Esther Smith, whose radiant voice and heartfelt sincerity make her a natural fit for the role made famous by Garland. Acerno captures both the romantic optimism and quiet emotional depth of Esther, bringing new life to these familiar songs. Her chemistry with Aaron Knight as John Truitt feels genuine and easy, creating tender moments that stand out as highlights of the evening.
The Smith family dynamic feels warm and authentic, anchored by James Gilbert and Liz Marion as the steady and loving parents, Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Their humor and heart keep the household grounded through all the family ups and downs. Sara Scavilla shines as the eldest sister, Rose, balancing sophistication with sharp comedic timing, while Adam Nelson brings a relaxed charm to the role of brother Lon.
Alexis Hoagland all but steals the show as Tootie, impish, imaginative, and wonderfully deadpan. She anchors the Halloween mayhem and delivers some of the evening’s most disarming punch lines. Olivia Huth (Agnes) is a sharp accomplice, matching Hoagland’s energy beat for beat, and the two create some of the most delightful moments in the production. Wayne Ivusich adds a lovely touch as Grandpa Prophater, giving the show a sense of nostalgia and heart that ties everything together.
Becky Titelman's direction keeps the pacing lively and the story flowing naturally, blending humor, sentiment, and song without ever feeling overdone. The choreography is playful and period-appropriate, adding fun and movement to the big ensemble numbers. Under Reenie Codelka’s musical direction, the score sparkles with warmth, and familiar songs sound as rich and fresh as ever.
Scottfield Theatre Company’s Meet Me In St. Louis is a heartwarming celebration of family, love, and community. It’s a reminder that the magic of classic American musicals still resonates, and it leaves you smiling long after the curtain falls.
Performances run over the next two weekends at the Havre de Grace Opera House, with four shows each weekend beginning Friday, October 10.
