Delavan Lake 7/10/23 through 7/17/23
The fish are in their mid summer patterns. The water temperatures have increased so most of the fish are in the deeper water and aggressively hitting.
Walleye fishing can be good given enough time. The fish can be caught on leeches fished on small jigs or on chrome and blue jigging rapalas. The best depth has been 21-25 ft of water. Look for the fish off of Assembly Park point or by Willow Point. You need to move around to find the active fish. Most of the success is coming in early morning or right before the sun sets.
Bluegills are on the w**dline in 14-16 ft of water. The best location is by Browns Channel or just west of the Yacht Club. They are aggressively striking leaf worms fished on a split shot rig. With all of the pressure the fish are seeing, the average size is slightly reduced from recent weeks. As the water continues to warm, the fish will move even deeper.
Largemouth bass are in their summer pattern. They are schooled up in large numbers. If you find a school you should be able to catch double digits without much problem. I’ve been fishing them with split shot rigged nightcrawlers or casting a black and blue All Terrain jig. The best depth to look for them is in 16-18 ft of water.
Northern pike action remains steady. The best depth is 20-25 ft of water. The best approach has been lindy rigging large suckers. Currently the pike are preferring the bigger bait. Look for the fish by the gray condos or by the old Boy Scout camp on the west end.
Smallmouth bass fishing has been kind of spotty. The numbers in the lake have improved greatly over recent years. I’ve been catching several every trip out. The best approach is a split shot rigged nightcrawler fished along the w**dline associated with rock. Some of my favorite spots are the Yacht club or Browns channel.

Delavan Lake Fishing Report 8/10/20 through 8/17/20
Fishing on Delavan has been a bit tough lately. The boat traffic and fishing pressure both remain very high. You can still catch some large fish but the numbers have been reduced significantly.
Largemouth bass have moved from the deep w**dlines into the shallows in 10 to 12 ft of water. A lot of fish are also being caught around the boat docks. The best docks to fish are on the north shore from the Yacht Club to Willow Point. The best approach is casting small finesse worms in green pumpkin or watermelon seed around the pier posts.
Yellow Perch fishing has been fantastic on the west end by the Viewcrest Bay. You want to anchor the boat in 10 t0 11 ft of water. They are biting on slip bobbers with hellgrammites. Hellgrammites are outfishing any other bait about 5 to 1.
Northern pike fishing has been average. I am starting to pick up a few more in the 12-16 ft depth range right on the w**dline. The best approach has been fishing Thill slip bobbers or letting the suckers free swim beneath the boat. I like to place the sucker about 1 ft above the w**dline. The best location has been by the gray condos which are located by Assembly Park.
Bluegills are biting in the 12-13 ft depth range. The best location is by Browns Channel or in front of Township Park. The bite of choice is leaf worms fished straight beneath the boat or casting into the w**ds. If your casting into the w**ds, the trick is to use a lighter sinker, it will help prevent you from getting snagged.
Walleye fishing is slow. Some people are catching a few on leeches, however I spent a whole morning trying to catch them and didn’t even get a bite. Once the water cools some more, fishing for walleyes should improve greatly. The best bite is typically late fall.
Good luck and I hope to see you on the water. For guide parties, please call Dave Duwe at 608-883-2050

Delavan Lake 5/18/20 through 5/25/20

Last week fishing on Delavan was hit or miss, you could catch fish all week if you weren’t particular about the species. Largemouth bass and bluegills were the most consistent bite this week. Walleyes were very spotty.

Largemouth bass are preparing to spawn, they are in 2-3 ft. of water. I have yet to see them start building nests but within the next week the spawn preparation will begin. My best success came on nightcrawlers fished on a split shot rig. The fish seem to prefer a cleaner bottom with none of the green slimy w**ds. The best location was by the outlet, near the rocks by Lake Lawn, and in the channels. Some success last week was also seen on Senkos, Texas rigged. Smoke or blue/black were the best colors.

The smallmouth bass that I caught last week were on the main lake points, such as Willow Point, the Yacht Club and near the Village Supper club. The smallies were caught on fathead minnows fished on a lindy rig. I used a 1/8 oz walking sinker and a small hook. The key to the presentation was keeping the sinker slightly off bottom to avoid the green w**ds. In windy conditions, it’s better to use a larger sinker for more control. The best depth was in 14-15 ft. of water on the drop offs.

A few walleyes were caught this week but it was pretty slow. Most of the success was on a white twister tail fished on a 1/8 oz jighead. Most of the fish were caught on the main lake points. I tried lindy rigging for a few hours on Friday but didn’t have any success. I think the water needs to warm up a few degrees before the fish will really become active.

Bluegills have been a guaranteed bite for the last week. Some of them were in excess of 10 inches. You had to w**d through lots of small ones to catch a good dinner. The best depth was in the shallow w**ds in 3-4 ft. of water. I caught all of my fish on an ice jig and a small red worms fished on a bobber.

Crappies were very sporadic. I spoke with several people who caught limits in 14-16 ft. of water on the west end of the lake. The bait of choice for them was small tube jigs fishing for suspended crappies. When I tried for them, they moved out of the area. The crappies will bite but it may take some searching and patience before you find an active school. With some warmer water, they too will begin spawning.

Good luck and I hope to see you on the water. For guide parties, please call Dave Duwe at 262-728-8063
