Our hearts are heavy at the dojo this evening. Shihan Jack Comer passed away unexpectedly this morning. Shihan Jack was our teacher and leader for many years.
Jack was an accomplished martial artist who began his training in 1980 with the Golden Dragon Ryu Jujutsu in South Bend, IN.
In 1982, Jack was introduced to his current teacher, Soke Thomas Burdine and began training in the art of Aikido. Jack continued training for over 38 years and achieved the high rank of Hachidan (8th degree Black Belt) in Aikido. In addition to Aikido, Jack had been awarded high level Black Belt ranks in Jujutsu, Aikijutsu, Taijutsu and Tomiki Ryu. Jack opened the Michiana Aikido Center in 1991 and he continued to teach Aikido to a group of committed students. Jack was awarded the title “Shihan” in 2005 in recognition of his accomplishments and contributions to the art of Aikido and for his commitment to his students.
Shihan Jack was well known in the martial arts community and was respected for his skill, his teaching ability, and his knowledge. He was always happy telling stories, discussing Aikido techniques and philosophy, and sharing martial arts trivia.
Please keep Shihan Jack’s family in your thoughts and please feel free to share your memories.
