CITY ORDERS MERRILL MOM TO REMOVE FRONT-YARD FIGHT ARENA USED TO SETTLE FACEBOOK ARGUMENTS
Neighbors Call It Trashy, City Officials Call It Illegal, Residents Call It Hilarious
MERRILL — City officials have ordered a Merrill woman to dismantle a full-scale mixed martial arts fighting arena she recently constructed in the front yard of her Memorial Drive home, sparking a heated debate over zoning laws, neighborhood aesthetics, and whether Facebook arguments should legally require gloves.
The structure, known locally as The Merrill Conflict Resolution Center, appeared over several weekends this spring and now occupies most of the front lawn between a decorative wishing well, two lawn gnomes, and what neighbors describe as "at least three vehicles that probably aren't running."
Homeowner Tammy "Octomom" Kropf says she was inspired after learning that a UFC event is scheduled to be held on the grounds of the White House.
"Everybody keeps calling this white trash," Kropf said while tightening the ropes around the ring. "But when the federal government puts a fighting ring in front of the White House, that's patriotic. When I put one in front of my house, suddenly it's a zoning violation."
Kropf then pointed toward the arena's chain-link fencing, folding-chair grandstands, bratwurst concession stand, and a hand-painted banner reading 'FACEBOOK GRUDGE MATCH FINALS SATURDAY.'
"If the UFC rink in front of the White House isn't white trash, neither is my rink."
According to Kropf, the arena serves an important community purpose by allowing residents to settle disputes in person rather than spending weeks arguing online
Participants sign a waiver, enter the ring, and settle disagreements through what organizers call "enhanced civic engagement."
Recent bouts have included:
• A dispute over who repeatedly cuts into the parent pickup line at Washington Elementary School
• An argument about whether Merrill's speed limit should be 25 or 35 mph
• Two men fighting over snowmobile trail near the Merrill Ice Drag Championship track
• A championship bout regarding which restaurant has the best fish fry
• A controversial Buy-Sell-Trade title match involving a used riding mower
The most popular event to date was reportedly the Washington Elementary Parent Pickup Invitational, which drew an estimated crowd of 200 spectators.
Witnesses say the fight stemmed from months of passive-aggressive social media posts and accusations of line-cutting.
"It was honestly the most productive discussion they've had all year," said one spectator.
While many residents have embraced the arena, neighbors living nearby have been less enthusiastic.
"It's trashy," said one homeowner who asked not to be identified. "Every weekend there are lawn chairs, pickup trucks parked in the grass, and somebody introducing fights through a karaoke machine."
Another neighbor complained that tourists have begun stopping to take photographs.
"My relatives came up from Wausau and wanted selfies with it," she said. "They said it was exactly what they imagined Merrill was like."
Ironically, that reaction appears to be a major reason many residents support the project.
"People from Wausau already think we're doing this stuff," said Merrill resident Dale Latzig. "We might as well give them something worth talking about."
Attendance has reportedly grown every week.
Last Saturday's card featured over a dozen sanctioned matches, including a lightweight division devoted entirely to local Facebook administrators and a senior division called 'COMMENTS SECTION LEGENDS.'
Mayor Scott "Soft Serve Scooter" Hasselhoff has made it clear that city officials want the structure removed immediately.
"We generally discourage residents from constructing professional combat venues in residential neighborhoods," Haas said during a press conference. "There are zoning laws for a reason."
The mayor added that city ordinances do not currently address front-yard octagons because "nobody thought they would ever need to."
City inspectors have issued multiple citations and ordered the arena dismantled.
Documents reportedly cite public safety concerns, noise complaints, and what one inspector described as "an alarming amount of Merrill."
Kropf says she intends to appeal.
In the meantime, she has announced a special exhibition event titled 'CITY HALL VS. EVERYBODY.'
At press time, officials confirmed they became aware of additional problems after discovering Kropf had begun construction on a smaller practice ring for neighborhood children called 'JUNIOR FACEBOOK COMMENTERS.'
