The first organized ESL courses were launched by the Cincinnati YMCA in 1856 to help German immigrants adapt to their new community and find better opportunities. Following this success, the YMCA of Greater New York expanded on this concept in the early 1900s by offering widespread adult night classes to new Americans.
Today, the YMCA continues its long tradition of community support by offering adult education, language, and integration services across the country.
