Good evening all,
The MADGA board had our August meeting last night, we were joined by A Projects Coordinator for the City Of mobile, Jen Greene. She wanted to discuss with us the projects coming up at Municipal Park that will affect disc golfers in the area. First things first, due to the projects scale in size we will be losing most of the baskets on Muni red for at least 18 months. The tentative start date according to Jen will be 8/10/2025. We have decided to pull baskets from hole 13 through hole 18. That area of land that will be used for storage of the extracted sediment from the lake and the heavy equipment storage. Previously, the city asked us to remove the baskets along the concrete ditch the runs the within of the park (Holes 1,2,3,4,8 and 18). This new ditch will provide a more natural look to the area and more of a sediment catching technology to help with the condition of the lake. This area will also include a removal of all dead trees and the planting of 28 trees and a brand-new pedestrian wooden bridge. This will be a beautiful upgrade to that side of the park which will make a great opportunity for a brand-new redesign for Muni Red after the project’s completion.
Secondly, while the project’s size is very large and there is a lot of heavy machinery and sediment storage, this will also impact OG Muni. Holes 2, A and 3 will be pulled for the 18-month project. We will be looking into putting in a temporary hole somewhere on the course to complete the 18-hole layout. They will also be removing dead trees and removing the invasive species from the area as well, which may be grounds for redesigning those holes, but we won’t really know until the project’s completion. We ask that you guys please be patient, mindful and respectful of the areas affected by the lake. This is a huge upgrade to our green space and park and will further beautify our courses. Also, while this construction is going on, there will be road closures at the park and parking lot closures as well. So be mindful of the areas in which you are occupying. Please be courteous and respectful to any and all workers you may come across during this time. Please do not contact the City of Mobile to complain that your Muni Red baskets or gone, or the project is taking too long. The City didn’t have to include us in their discussions and updates, but they chose to. We want to protect and instill the great working relationship we currently have. The more complaints they get for small things, the less they will want to work with us in the future.
Now for the News a lot of people have been waiting for. As per Jen Greene, there are absolutely NO PLANS TO EXPAND THE TENNIS COURTS on to the green space and or disc golf course. We know a lot of rumors and pictures got out about the possibility of the expansion, but she was very confident in saying that that was not going to happen any time soon. The Tennis Center is an advocate for themselves, just as we advocate for our courses. So, we can all rest our weary hearts!! Muni is here to stay for the foreseeable future.
WHOA!! The Growler is back!! And NO not to replace the Howler this time, but instead a fun way to celebrate the upcoming Howler! The “Growler for the Howler” will be a non-sanctioned tournament held at the Admiral on 9/27/2025! If you are familiar with the Growler or played it in the past it will be very similar, (Admiral will be split into 2 different courses). Now that we got all of that out of the way, we can move on to the Howler. Get your calendars set!!! 10/25-10/26 online registration opens on Friday, 8/8/2025 so get registered.
