For those of you that are dedicated tog fishermen, the togging in the bay is very good right now. I took a short shot at them yesterday and ended up catching 15 in a 2 hr period 3 of which were legal fish. Lots of action and you can do this even when we can’t get into the ocean due to the crazy winds that we’ve had recently. I can take up to 3 anglers. I have a manitowoc indigo ice machine with bin for sale. 490 lbs per day, half dice. Empty it in the morning and it’s full by the evening. Knew the pair cost $5000. Asking $2500. Pics available if needed. It has been sheltered in a shed and is simple to set up.

The free spirit has been sold. After 20 years walking her decks she has found a new home in Marina Del Rey CA. However I will be running back bay charters for up to 3 anglers for fluke, stripers, sheepshead and whatever else cares to eat. I’ll limit my fishing to 30 miles out on a good day. That means we may get a shot at some tuna if they show up like they did last year, as well as ocean fluke and seabass. Same great tackle, same captain and same fun. The boat is named “it’ll do” and it seems a proper name. She’s 19 feet key west with an 8’ beam and has the best raymarine electronics you can get. Plus,since I have a trailer, we can hit that great raritan bay striper fishing as well as the drum in cape may. It’s that time of year again, time to beat the drum in Delaware Bay. The boat’s in and docked at Utsch’s again and we’re ready to roll for black drum in Delaware bay. If you’ve never done this, you have no idea of how good and fun the fishing is. A small one weighs 30 Lb., and I’ve caught some pushing 100. The Free Spirit is perfect for this fishing with a huge, stable cockpit and the best tackle designed for these fish. Not only drum, but as of 5/15, the seabass season opens. Even with the current fight we are involved in, we have to look ahead to the future. Since the marinas are open, we can use this time to prepare for when we again can fish and enjoy each other’s company. I’ll be getting the FreeSpirit ready for the season. My wish is that all of you and yours remain safe and we all come through this with our health. That is the most important thing we have.

Well, sea bass is closed but the fluke are snapping. Kind of neat that under the bunker schools are some very nice combos. In addition we have been catching some small dolphin on light spinning rods in the areas that we fish for the fluke! Great fun! By the way fluke like to eat dolphin too.

Lemme tell ya, drumming is darn good right now. Usually at least 1 per angler and some real beauties, (if you can say that drum are beautiful), I’ll be in Cape May at least through the weekend and I have a couple of dates open including tomorrow afternoon since there was a mixup on the booking. The black drum is one of the toughest fish inshore of the 30 line and are good eating as well. Dave Dunlevy and his family caught 8 today releasing 5 to be caught again. I am willing to stay in Cape May for these great fish through next week if I book a couple of days. Otherwise, I’ll be returning to Margate early next week where I’ll be running sea bass, fluke, and sharking adventures Of course, the bluefin tuna have shown up inshore and we can go beat on them as well. Overall, ya have a hell of a lot of choices to select from. So, if you want to catch probably the biggest fish most folks have caught, call me and let’s go drumming together, or we can pursue whatever rings your chimes.

They say that when the dogwood blooms and when the gnats bite that the drum fish bite turns on. Well they are blooming and the gnats are a pain in the butt, and black drum are snapping out of Cape May.! For the next month or so you have a shot at catching a fish that may exceed 80 lbs. without having to run 50+ miles offshore and spend 12+ hours trying to catch a fish. Most folks that fish for drum on the FreeSpirit catch the biggest fish they’ve ever caught and we only have to run a mile or 2 from the inlet. Seldom do people get sick drum fishing since we are on the relatively calm Delaware Bay. Not only that, but the best fishing is in the late afternoon and early evening so you don’t have to get up wicked early to be at the boat by 6:00A.M. Instead you can show up around 1 or 2 in the afternoon and we can go catching!! All this good news and the drum will kick your butt when you hook them up, and they are quite tasty on the dinner table. How do you beat that??? All it takes is a call or an email and you can bring yourself and up to 5 other buddies on board and take part in this great fishing. Everything is supplied but the smiles and they come naturally.

I was at the boat today getting it ready to splash around April 5 or so. That’s just in time for the springtime tog fishing. If you haven’t tried it, togs are a blast to catch, they are sneaky biters and very good eating. The togging is usually pretty darn good and they close the season at the end of April. Of course, then the black drum show up and it’s game on. I do enjoy watching my charters wrestle these hard fighting fish. If you haven’t tried it, you have missed a great time! I do have dates open for both of these species so drop me an email or a call and let’s go fishing!
