First Day Nerves? Here’s How We Turn Them Into Strength

This morning, her backpack looked like it could swallow her whole.

As you all probably know, the last few YEARS have been big for Ridley & I. Lots of chaos & fear followed by a lot of beautiful change [but change nonetheless].
With BIG life things comes BIG emotions for a little person & sometimes channeling those BIG emotions results in BIG behaviors (iykyk).
The last few weeks have been rough & tough for Ridley & I & I am beyond thankful for her to have Pride Mixed Martial Arts not only as an MMA gym, but as a safe haven, a place to feel safe in voicing her feelings & learning from her mistakes & for me, to have a true partner in parenting some of these rough seasons. if we don't say it & brag enough, we love you! When a kid throws their first elbow in Muay Thai, it almost never looks smooth. And that’s okay.

Because in here, we expect mistakes. We want mistakes. They’re not failure—they’re feedback.

In a world that chases instant gratification, repetition is a lost art. But that’s what turns awkward into skilled. Clumsy into capable. And capable into confident.

Every elbow they throw here isn’t just sharpening technique—it’s shaping a mindset:“I can do hard things. I can improve. I can keep going.”

And that’s a lesson that sticks long after class is over.

Somewhere along the way, society started believing that kids should always be comfortable… that boredom, struggle, and hard work are somehow unfair.

Here’s the truth: Discipline is not punishment.
Discipline is training.
It’s the ability to push through boredom, frustration, or fatigue… and keep going.

It’s okay for your kids to be uncomfortable. It’s okay for them to struggle. In fact, it’s necessary. Struggle teaches them resilience. Discomfort teaches them perseverance. Hard work builds confidence like nothing else can.

When we shield our kids from every challenge, we rob them of the chance to see what they’re capable of. The first time something gets tough in life, they won’t have the tools to push through.

That’s why we do what we do on the mats. At Pride Mixed Martial Arts, our students learn that sometimes you won’t feel like training… but you show up anyway. Sometimes you won’t nail a technique the first time… but you keep drilling. Sometimes you’re tired and sore… but you find that extra gear.

That’s how champions are made—not just in martial arts, but in life.
