🀄️ MAHJ METHODS: BEGINNER RULES EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW

Every experienced Mah Jongg player was once a beginner.

The rules can feel overwhelming at first, but you don’t have to learn everything at once.

Start with the fundamentals.

✔️ Learn when you can call a discard.
✔️ Understand how exposures work.
✔️ Know the rules for jokers.
✔️ Follow the rhythm of each turn.
✔️ Learn to recognize patterns instead of trying to memorize the entire card.

Most importantly…

Don’t rush to choose one hand.
One of the biggest beginner mistakes is committing too early. Let the tiles guide your direction as the game develops.

I’ve also included the five most common beginner mistakes I see in class—avoiding these alone will make learning much easier.

LOSING MORE THAN YOU’RE WINNING?

It’s ok and it’s not a bad thing:)

That might sound strange coming from a Mah Jongg teacher, but hear me out.

Some of the biggest improvements happen during the games you don’t win.

When you’re winning consistently, it’s easy to focus on the outcome. You just settle in.

When you’re losing, you’re forced to focus on the process.

The good things that come from losing..have a talk with yourself. Might be good to just talk inside you head and not out loud. But, hey you do you.

Think about this…

👉 Are you recognizing patterns faster?
👉 Are you choosing a direction sooner?
👉 Are you reading exposures more accurately?
👉 Are you pivoting before it’s too late?
👉 Are you learning what not to do?

These are all wins.

The strongest players I know still lose plenty of hands.

They miss tiles.
They get beaten on the wall.
They make the wrong read.

The difference is that they learn from it and move on to the next hand.

Some hands end with Mah Jongg.

Others end with a lesson.

Both make you a better player.

And just so you know… I can go down the rabbit hole trying to figure out what I’m doing wrong as well. But, I have learned to maximize the tiles I have. No jokers.. singles and pairs… tiles disappear, I pivot. Sometimes my hands are quite diverse. Sometimes I spend most of the game playing defense.

As my friends tell me.. it’s not you, it’s just the game. Sometimes the tiles are with you and other times they are not:)

🀄️ HOW DO YOU STAY MOTIVATED WHEN YOU’RE LOSING A LOT?

Let’s be honest. Nobody enjoys losing hand after hand after hand.👎

You start questioning your decisions. ❓❓

You wonder if everyone else sees something you don’t. 👀

You begin thinking:

“I must be terrible at this.”

BUT, what if losing isn’t always losing?

What if it’s learning?

One of the biggest mindset shifts in Mah Jongg is realizing that improvement and winning are not the same thing.

Some days you’ll win several games and learn very little.

Other days you’ll lose every game and walk away a much stronger player.

Instead of asking:

❌ Why do I keep losing?

Try asking:

✅ What am I seeing now that I wasn’t seeing a month ago?

✅ Am I recognizing patterns faster?

✅ Am I committing sooner?

✅ Am I reading exposures better?

✅ Am I pivoting with purpose instead of panic?

Those are wins.

Strong players don’t become strong because they win all the time.

They become strong because they pay attention when they lose.

They notice what worked and they notice what didn’t.

And they carry those lessons into the next game.

So if you’re in a rough stretch, don’t measure your progress only by the score.

Measure it by your decisions.

Measure it by your understanding.

Measure it by your growth.

And sometimes the toughest games teach the best lessons.

Lastly, if you are lucky enough to play with people who understand this.. listen to them when they remind you 💕

🀄️ THE NEXT MOVE: TOURNAMENT PLAY

PART 4: Tournament Etiquette

One of the things I appreciate most about tournament play is the respect players show one another.

Yes, everyone wants to do well.

Yes, there are prizes.

But good sportsmanship is just as important as good strategy.

A few simple habits go a long way:

✔️ Arrive on time and be ready to play.

✔️ Keep the game moving. Tournament rounds are timed, and everyone shares that responsibility.

✔️ Know the rules before you sit down. If you’re unsure about something, ask the tournament director—not the other players at the table.

✔️ One common myth is that tournaments require complete silence. They don’t. While a hand is in progress, conversations should be kept to a minimum so everyone can concentrate. However, once a game ends, it’s perfectly acceptable to quietly chat with your tablemates while waiting for the next round or while others finish their games. Just be mindful of the players who are still competing nearby.

✔️ Be honest if a mistake is made. We all make them.

✔️ Win graciously. Lose graciously.

Remember, every player at your table loves Mah Jongg just as much as you do.

Some have played for decades. Others may be entering their very first tournament.

Help create an atmosphere where everyone feels welcome.

At the end of the day, people may forget your score…

But they’ll remember how you treated them.

The Next Move: Your reputation as a player isn’t built only by how well you play. It’s also built by your integrity, your kindness, and your respect for the game and the people around you.
