Goal: Win the #1 team title at IBJJF San Antonio in the Gi. Wouldn’t it be cool if an RGV team came out on top in IBJJF over all other teams in the state? What would it mean if a primarily No-Gi academy shocked everyone and came out on top, in the Gi? As a coach, it’s always been a dream to be handed the team title in an IBJJF event. It would mean a great deal IMO as it relates to training methods, teaching, and challenge the status quo. Most people would say I’m crazy and is unlikely, especially in the Gi. We are not most people. And this is exactly why we’re coming for that team title. I think we have a really good shot.

Overall successful Friday Night Jiujitsu ! 1.9k views on YouTube. Our first one in a long time. Lots of submissions. Some chaos. Lots of fun. We’ll be back hopefully sooner rather than later. Lots of great matches to make after this event.

Austin Open (Gi): Congrats to these athletes! Leonardo Treviño takes gold in the lightweight division. I challenged him to test himself and he took silver in the open class!! He met a Pans medalist at a much higher weight in the absolute and lost only by advantages. Lucia McPhee got gold in her division with outstanding performances. Eduardo A. Trevino got bronze in his weight and absolute! Great work. They all demonstrated coachability, new techniques, and a willingness to challenge themselves and have fun. While we primarily have been known for being a No-Gi gym, I’m incredibly proud of our athletes showing that no matter the ruleset 80/20 Jiu-Jitsu is a problem.

A pic of last nights training. The Twins do one final session before IBJJF No-Gi Brasileiros in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This will be a deep bracket against Brazils toughest. They are the only Americans in the bracket and will represent TX and the US. They are coming in prepared with Leonardo Treviño coming in as the #1 seed in the bracket. The hard work is behind us. Congrats to everyone! 80/20 Jiu-Jitsu B L A C K L I S T E D and Jiu-Jitsu McAllen kids, adults & families held a joint promotion ceremony today! Shoutout to our newest black belts: Mark A Coulthard, Robert Schweller, Mario “Q” Quintanilla, and Noe Cuellar!!! Congrats to Erick Gomez on his first degree on his black belt! Shoutout to newly promoted brown belts: Ian William, Ezra James Garza, Will Maza, & Bryan Guerra. Blue belts: vince ★ & Eddie G. Green belt: Archer Schweller. Each and every person’s journey is special and we’re excited to honor and celebrate everyone’s accomplishments. When you look at each one of these individuals there is an amazing story to tell for each of them. For the brown and black belts, each one of these individuals is a leader, coach, mentor with a proven track record in Jiu-Jitsu. We’re honored to recognize them today. For the lower belts, today marked a new phase in their journey where they (maybe much to their own surprise) have been recognized to be at the next level or stage in their own personal journey. We hope they stick with it and continue in their trajectory and become the future mentors of our organizations in their own time. Congrats to the so many other stripe promotions and kids. The future of Jiu-Jitsu in the RGV is in great hands.

All Valley Competition Training (No-Gi) this Sunday at 80/20 Jiu-Jitsu! Open to IBJJF competitors and/or coaches from any team or affiliation. 1pm to 3pm. Absolutely free. This is intended to prepare for Brasileiros, Opens, and No-Gi Worlds.

Major congrats to Sage ()! Him and I first started training together back in the UTPA BJJ Club days and I’m honored to have presented him his purple belt today. Sage recently rejoined 80/20 and has been an amazing contribution to the team. He worked hard everyday and was already tough but man he absorbed, applied, and excelled. Thanks for having us brotha and we wish you the best of luck in what comes next!

To the 🔝: Major congrats to the team for their performances this weekend at IBJJF Houston No-Gi International Open. With just a few athletes, 80/20 had established itself as the gym with highest talent density in TX. This is a huge feat as Gracie Barra and Checkmat are large franchise systems. Gracie Barra has over 1,000 schools in its franchise and Checkmat has 200. Pedigo Submission Fighting is an out of state team that has whole documentaries about them. Yet, there we are sticking our nose where we don’t belong. I’ll tell you what, we’re coming for that #1 spot. Everyone lets social media form their opinion about what teams are the best in TX. We got a chip on our shoulder. The data doesn’t lie. Be so good they can’t ignore you.

Major congrats to the team! Getting it done at IBJJF Houston No-Gi! got 🥇 🥇 in his weight and the open class! ._.bjj also gets it done with 🥇 ! Trevino Bros and with 🥇 and 🥈 battling it out in the finals. And now according to the unofficial jiujitsu.net rankings and ELO algorithm, Leo breaks into #15 in the world at middleweight (one of only 3 Americans). Leo is now top ranked at multiple weight classes. Randy holds #16 in heavyweight and #23 at medium-heavy. Xavier breaks into the top 50 with a rank of #43 in medium-heavy. Multiple top ranked athletes out of middle of nowhere TX. There’s no advanced class. There’s no competition class. Just regular people doing their thing. The guy or girl just trying to get in shape could become the next top 50 athlete in the world in their division.
