Connect, enjoy, and be part of our vibrant community! Hope to see you at the Red Dragon Canoe Club! The Red Dragon Canoe Club is a family-friendly sailing/paddling club located on 6 beautiful acres along the Delaware River. It offers paddling trips, sailing opportunities and lots of fun for the whole family. The Shipman Mansion, located at RDCC, is a circa 1869 Second Empire Victorian Mansion that

is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Mansion is currently being restored by The Shipman Mansion Foundation and is available as a rental venue. The Mansion houses a number of antique racing canoes and other historical artifacts and is open for tours on the first weekend of the month, April – November, on Saturday and Sunday 1-4. More information about The Shipman Mansion can be found at www.shipmanmansion.org. RDCC, as one of the oldest boating clubs on the Delaware River, was founded in 1883 by Woodward Norgrave. The origin of the name is not documented, but the red dragon is a well-known Welsh emblem and Welsh connections are prominent in eastern Pennsylvania. The Club occupied two locations while in Pennsylvania, the latter being in Wissinoming where pilings for the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge now stands. As the name implies, the original focus of the Club was primarily on canoeing, hunting and fishing. The members traveled as far afield to Canada on hunting, and fishing expeditions. They had many adventures on these trips, including one where they ran afoul of an Indian tribe and were held hostage. Eventually, interest in canoeing waned, and members turned to small sailboats, with frequent large and colorful regattas on the Delaware River. There is a documented case of a member bringing a catboat to the Club as early as 1903. Today, the Club offers a number of sailboats that may be used by members. Efforts are being made to boost its sailing program and the Club is interested in attracting new members to its social and boating activities. If you are interested, please see the membership information under www.reddragoncanoe.org.

RDCC Memorial Day Regatta
Race Report -- June 6, 2026

Our Memorial Day Regatta took on June 6 in 7 to 11 knots of breeze. The racing fleet shook off some early-season rust and put on a fun, spirited day on the river.
Race 1 finished in a dead heat between Louis and Jeff, both driving their Lasers across the line at 8:23. Paul in his RS Aero 7, Jacob and Sarah in the club 420, and Doug and Wilson in their Cape Dory 28 kept the pressure on and made sure no one got comfortable out front.
Louis took Races 2 and 3 to claim the series. Jeff, never one to miss a teaching moment, treated the fleet to an impromptu capsize recovery demonstration somewhere in there -- we're told his technique was flawless.
Paul flew the Aero 7 beautifully all day, threading through the fleet with the kind of quiet speed that makes that boat dangerous in any breeze. Jacob and Sarah reportedly had a blast on the 420 -- a great sign for the racing program. Doug and Wilson deserve real credit for bringing the Cape Dory out and mixing it up -- racing a full-keel 28-footer against a pack of dinghies on a short course is a genuine act of sportsmanship, and they made it competitive.

There’s a Place for YOU at the Red Dragon Canoe Club

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and these photos show some of what life looks like during a day at the Red Dragon Canoe Club.

Members are out fishing from the dock, paddling on the river, sailing small boats, and getting larger boats ready to head out. The porch of the Shipman Mansion is a calm, welcoming place to sit and enjoy the view.

But what the photos don’t show is just as important, the sense of community here. The Red Dragon has been a gathering place for generations, and members look out for each other. Whether you’re on the water, helping with gardening, decorating for events, or simply relaxing on the lawn, you’re part of something special.

Members sometimes bring yoga mats to enjoy the quiet mornings. Others stop by after work just to sit on the porch and unwind. There’s always something happening, and always someone happy to say hello.

Why drive anywhere else when all of this is right here.

Thank you, Sue, for the photos.

We’d love to welcome you. Reach out to arrange a private tour.

It was too chilly to paddle but the Full "Blue Moon" Paddle and Campfire was AWESOME! Wilson sailed and members gathered around the campfire at the waterfront to enjoy the sunset, the stars, and good company. Jupiter and Venus were both visible in the evening sky.

It was a blue moon night, but fun at the waterfront happens often, not just “once in a blue moon”. These campfires are one of the best parts of being a member, offering simple moments to share snacks, conversation, and the riverfront together.

More events like this are coming. Watch for details! All members are invited to join in.

Thanks to Reg and Sue for the photos.

On this windy day, RDCC members headed down to the waterfront to clean up the club kayaks and sailboats for the upcoming season. A big thank‑you to everyone who came out to scrub, rinse, and get the boats ship‑shape.

These kayaks, canoes, and sailboats are available for use anytime by members who join at the full membership level. It’s $400 per year for the entire family.
