This season is about to come to an end and as soon as it is over we’ll be counting hours minutes and seconds until the next one. It’s been one of a kind but times like these make the good ones great. There is no better place to be than right here.

Down to the wire. The last couple of weeks till it’s over.

If I could only have two weeks to hunt every year it would be the last two weeks of January. Year in and out it is the most consistent period of the season for good water, weather, and ducks.

Podcasters and private land hunters tend to have a huge disdain for late January. Their food sources are depleted, their fields are often frozen over, and ducks tend to leave them for the new water in the bottoms and they pout for more days in November.

Call shy mallards on supposedly overcrowded public land the last week of season. Down to the wire.

Despite the dire predictions of podcasters, this season is showing some early promise with unusual fall rains and the Farmer’s Almanac forecasting snow and bitter cold the first week of season.
Nothing would warm our hearts and possibly our gun barrels faster than frozen fields the first split.
