Lots of mixed feelings the last few days. This place has meant a lot to me over the last 7 years. First as an athlete, then as a coach. I’m looking forward to the future of MacStrength but I know I’ll never forget this place.

No Excuses. Moving forward.

As I investigate the epistemology of Critical Rationalism further, it seems to reconcile with Dynamical Systems Theory very well. Knowledge comes not from external sources, but is created through conjecture and testability. This is critical in understanding the discovery of skill, as skill, like knowledge, must be created or discovered in each person’s authentic process of conjecture, testability, and error correction. Not all knowledge is skill, however, as just understanding or knowing something does not necessarily mean you know how to wield it in a practical sense. The fallibility of “experts” is at the basis of why this epistemology is so important. An expert could have a high level of skill, or knowledge, but transferring this to another through teaching will take the form of a system or a model, whether physical or mental. This isn’t a bad thing, one must just understand that this is not the end of the line. The student must run the model through his or her own filter of conjecture and error correction in order to create their own authentic skill and knowledge, always keeping in mind their own fallibility. I wonder if or have any thoughts on this?

“Why do you lay down after training?”

“Are you meditating?”

Spending some time at the end of each training session on breath practice can be a difference maker for some athletes.

The benefits can be highly individualized.

1. For some, the benefits are biomechanical. Re-learning and patterning the ribcage’s expansion and contraction with a neutral pelvis, focusing on breathing with the diaphragm and not the first rib/collarbone/SCM/levator scapulae complex can have benefits for movement, mobility, and stability in the shoulder and spine.

2. For some, the benefits are physiological. Down-regulating the sympathetic nervous system and improving parasympathetic activity after training can improve heart rate variability(HRV), muscle recovery, and adrenal response.

3. For others, the benefits are psychological. The 5 minutes after training spent just breathing are the only 5 minutes all day where we aren’t consuming or processing some type of information. The art of mindfully doing nothing can make a big, big difference in the psychology of a busy young athlete.

For most, the benefits are a combination of the three.

To try it out, start with this: set a timer for 5 minutes, lay down with your eyes closed, and breath with this rhythm: 5sec inhale, 5sec hold, 5sec exhale, 5sec hold, repeat.

Love coming up with competitive ways to train change-of-direction ability (not necessarily agility, more on that later) for my guys. The will to win is always a better motivator than anything else.
Although this isn’t necessarily true agility as it’s predetermined, and doesn’t hold much movement fidelity to baseball, some interesting movement problem solving emerges in this video after Jack’s hat falls off 🤔 watch closely as he works around the constraint to solve the problem.

Coordination and strength through hip Internal/External rotation is imperative for anyone who wants to be any version of a rotational athlete. (That means you too, weekend golfers) Anecdotally, this is also a quality that made a huge difference in my own chronic low back pain.
The Z-Sit and reach is a staple. Great to close the gap between active and passive mobility.
