On my walk this evening I found myself at the neighborhood park.
The weather perfect.
Alto cumulus clouds dotting the sky blue sky.
Shades of white gold and dusky blues beginning to shade the evening’s clouds.
As I entered the park, Uli tugging at the end of her leash and my crocs landing on the post-rain soaked grass, I thought to myself, “I love this park.”
A vision of the park filled with playing families, community gatherings, friends smiling and laughing together filled my mind.
I realized something…
I wasn’t loving the park, I was loving my idea of it. What it represented.
I thought of Jason, my fiancé, where do I love my idea of him?
The safety he represents.
The security I ascribe to his presence.
But in life, there is no safety.
There is no security.
We ride the wave; we can’t tame it.
We can move with.
Respond to.
We can’t shape it.
You can’t secure it.
You can’t love the idea of it, but not the thing itself.
To be in relationship with life, you must love the thing itself.
Exactly as it is.
Not the idea of the park and what it represents, but the air on your skin now. The golden light on the tree trunks amplifying the texture of the bark now. The sound of pickle balls being slapped around and sneakers padding across the court now.
Presence isn’t loving the idea of something.
It’s feeling the full wave of life and riding the truth of what’s here in this moment, what’s arising, forming, moving, flowing.
You can’t ride the wave if you’re imagining what you like so much about the wave.
Imagination isn’t now.
It’s a subtle separation from this one precious moment.
Ever try balancing on something that’s really hard to balance on?
Do you remember how here it makes you? How you can’t love the idea of the balancing act, or what the balancing act represents, or you lose your balance entirely?
Life calls you into loving the is-ness, not what it represents.
Love calls you into loving the is-ness of someone, not what they mean to you.
The wave requires your devotion to the is-ness, or you fall off your board and begin flailing in the surf.
Because life loves you,
you must meet the is-ness
and fall in love with Her there.
PS - I’m holding a FREE masterclass next Saturday. Mapping feeling with breath and navigating life from your pelvic bowl. It’s a deepening of WombBreath, the same method I’ve been using with highly sensitive women since 2020.
