In a world where it seems bad news gets all the fanfare most days, it’s a refreshing change to highlight some very positive developments in the off-road community. Back in May, we had Amy Scharmen, president of the Michigan Horse Trails Association author an article for our Great Lakes TrailRider Magazine on etiquette for sharing trails with horses. This week, Amy reached out with the following message.

“We had a large equestrian camping event at Garey Lake on the same weekend as an off-road motorcycle group was riding at Turtle Lake, so we were all riding in the same area. I heard so many compliments on how wonderful the motorized users were that weekend with giving horseback riders the time they needed for safe passings. Only one report of a rider who did not. I even had a friend say, “Gosh, it’s like they really know what to do now,” and I shared with her that the CCC offered the opportunity to write an article on horse etiquette for Great Lakes TrailRider Magazine earlier this season. Thank you for all you’ve done to get the word out.”

Hearing from Amy makes us aware that we’re not out there alone. It’s also a great reminder that consideration for others goes a long ways toward keeping people safe and able to enjoy the thing we’re all in this for - our shared love of the great Michigan outdoors. Hats off to our friends in the Great Lakes Dual Sporters (the group referenced in Amy’s message) for exemplifying so well what good people on motorcycles are really about. Here’s the link to Amy’s article:

The Cycle Conservation Club of Michigan is deeply saddened by news of the recent loss of a dear friend. Steve Stapula, co-founder of Michigan's own SAR Offroad departed this world on May 29. His passion for the sport and contributions to the off-road community left a legacy impacting enthusiasts not only across the country, but around the world. We lost a good one.
