A domestic pig that escapes a farm begins changing within months. Tusks emerge because nobody is castrating it anymore. The coat thickens with coarse bristles that the farm never selected for because the farm selected for thin skin and fast weight gain. The body leans out. Muscle shifts from the hindquarters toward the head and shoulders because rooting through forest floor and fighting for breeding rights uses the front of the animal, not the back. The snout lengthens. The behavior turns nocturnal and aggressive. The same pig can look like a barnyard animal in January and something else entirely by fall. It does not become a wild boar. It becomes a feral hog, which is a domestic animal halfway back to something its ancestors left 9,000 years ago and not quite able to finish the trip.

The ability to revert is called phenotypic plasticity. The pig carries the wild boar's full genetic toolkit inside it because domestic pigs and wild boar are the same species, Sus scrofa. Domestication did not remove the genes for tusks, bristles, lean muscle, and aggression. It suppressed them through selective breeding, castration, controlled diet, and the absence of any need to fight, forage, or flee. Remove the controls and the genes express. A pig that has never seen a forest floor will begin rooting in one on the first day. A boar that has never fought will grow tusks and use them within its first breeding season.

The USDA describes the result directly: feral swine often look very similar to domestic hogs, but are generally thinner with thicker hides of coarse bristly hair and longer tusks. Because of their extensive crossbreeding, feral swine vary in color and coat pattern, including combinations of white, black, brown, and red. Some look like pure Eurasian wild boar. Others still look like the farm pig they came from.

At the Savannah River Site in South Carolina, researchers measured what happens when this process runs for decades inside a fenced population. Over years of monitoring, mean snout length in the wild pig population increased. Ear length decreased. Bristles became longer. Coat patterns shifted toward the grizzled wild-type coloring of Eurasian boar. The population was becoming visually wilder with every generation as natural selection favored the animals whose bodies worked best in the forest and penalized the ones still carrying the proportions of a feedlot hog. But skull measurements told a different story. Even after decades of feralization, the skulls retained domestic characteristics. The outside was changing faster than the inside.

A nationwide genetic study of 6,566 feral swine across the United States confirmed that the vast majority carried mixed ancestry dominated by Western heritage domestic breeds and European wild boar. America's wild pigs are not one thing or the other. They are a genetic collision between escaped livestock and imported boar that has been running for centuries, producing animals that range from pink and floppy-eared to dark and razor-backed depending on which ancestor's genes are running the show in any given animal.

A 2022 genomic study of wild pig sounders added one more detail. Although most sounders consisted of related females and their offspring, some contained unrelated adult females that had been socially incorporated into the group. A sounder is not always a closed family. A newcomer, whether an escaped domestic pig or a dispersing feral female, can enter the group and stay.

A feral hog sounder that contains an animal still carrying pink skin and floppy ears is not necessarily harboring a recent escapee. It may be the great-granddaughter of a farm pig that escaped 30 years ago and still carries the domestic traits that natural selection has not yet finished removing. Or it may be a feral animal whose particular genetic combination happened to express more of the domestic ancestor and less of the boar. Every sounder in America is running a different version of the same experiment, and the experiment has been going on long enough that a single group can contain animals that look like they came from three different species.
